There was a story on the news the other nite about carbs & local stores selling low carb stuff opening soon, a 1 carb margarita (how??), etc. My hubby & I started discussing it & he is saying that say with potato chips, the low carb one are still healthier because they are low carb than the regular ones. I say it depends on the trans fats & hydrogenated oil content (bad!) and whether the label is correct. With no carb label laws, the net carb content of a product is subjective to the manufacturer.

It seems that manufacturers are stating the total carb content, reducing fiber and other stuff to get the net carb content. But is what they are reducing the total by other than fiber a true-non carb or something that shouldn't be counted?

It must be 1 carb margarita mix, I've got some "Baja Bob's" stuff thats the same thing.

I think it depends on the diet. When I was strictly on Atkins, I was allowed to subtract fiber from the total carb count (I still do). Usually if its not meat or something that I know of for a fact, I count "0" carbs as 1. For all we know theres .9 grams in a label that says 0.

Its better to be conservative IMHO.

They are usually hiding carbs like glycerol and such...so I wouldn't trust the label. The health issue really depends on the food - and you are correct about the hydrogenated oils.

low carb low shmarb
sorry but i beleive in trying to eat as natural as possible and all these low carb versions of things are probably far from that with all the hidden sugar alcohols etc

Exactly, so if the manufacturer is reducing the carb amount by fiber & sugar alcohols, the label is wrong cuz sugar alcohols count as a carb. Or just a deceptive practice that isn't against the law right now. Plus no matter what the "carb" amount if there are hydrogenated oils in them, forget it!

I always subtract Fiber though... but I can't imagine much fiber in a margarita, otherwise after 4 of em you'd be running to the toilet

atkins taught sugar alcohols and alcohols temporarily suspends ketosis and burns them off first before returning to ketosis

so that means they cannot be stored but must be burned off first

that is what they are saying about mct

ordered two jars cannot wait the benefits i have been reading sound phenom

these are my opions and for all it is worth it has worked for me and still working

but this is my body and not yours and yours may require differently

i am 41 years old and have tried every diet since i was 15

The problem with these non-insulin impacting carbs is they're just useless kcalories. People tend to think because the net impact carbs are decreased, then those kcalories don't exist.

I log all carbs as carbs, regardless of their net impact. My log is set up to back into carbs; kcalories for a product are already reduced by the non-digestible carbs (fiber), so once you remove the kcalories for protein and fat, what's left over is the kcalorie content of the digestible carbohydrate.

Logging products containing sugar alcohols piss me off since they bring up my carb content, so I tend to avoid them. Plus, they're just another form of processed foods.
