Indeed, this series made me question my belief that reason and science allowed me to overcome early childhood trauma in the public schools;You not only obey the state but you serve the state as the highest ideal. Questioning a teacher would be questioning legitimate state authority, unthinkable.

Don't know if this is topical or not but there's an episode of Through the Wormhole entitled "can we eliminate evil" you might find interesting. Essentially, sociopaths can be both born and made. There are measurable differences between the brains of violent criminals (primarily in the amygdala) and "normal" people. What's interesting is that if a person with the abnormality in their brain has a "normal" childhood they don't necessarily grow up to be sociopaths.
When I raised animals there was a simple rule of thumb, you don't breed an ill tempered animal, period. You stood a good chance of getting ill tempered offspring. I witnessed this directly with hamsters, of all things. My ex and I had Russian Dwarf Hamsters of a (then) highly unusual color, making them desirable. The female was a good mother, but a total bitch. The male was sweet. Because of the unusual color we let them have pups. EVERY litter they had resulted in 50% of the offspring being biters.
Humans, having more evolved brains, can be born with the native tendency to "bite" but since we do have frontal lobes we can be "taught" what constitutes appropriate behavior
We have the ability to control our impulses if we are given the right tools from a young age.

You might be interested in seeing Most Evil from the Discovery Channel, it's an evil index research in which they evaluate murders and rate them from 1 to 22 one being self defense murder and 22 being the most twisted serial killers, Charles Whitman killed his wife AND mother, then climbed a tower and shot/killed 12 people and injured 31 yet he only scored 8, when I first saw it I was like WTF!? he should be waaaay hire, well it turns out he had a large tumor pressing against the impulse control area on the brain, also turns out he really didnt know why he was doing what he was but couldnt stop himself, he left notes and even requested his body be autopsied for findings on his behavior, fascinating, for me at least

Java, no, it isn't, you can't make that kind of statement. Yes, you can beat violence into children, but you can also have a perfectly loving childhood and the violence comes out of nowhere and you look into ancestry and there is violence. Look at their brains via FMRI and there are problems with the centers that control impulse. Contrary wise you can have a violent childhood and still grow up to be a basically decent person.
In fact, plenty of people who had horribly abusive childhoods grow up to help others even more. Watch the show I mentioned.

sure, in some cases, someone being abused and sexually assaulted as a kid, or bullied his entire life can lash back at society and develop psychopathic tendencies, etc...
However, I truly believe that there are people born that are more prone to being fucked up...some genetic anamoly, some chemical imbalance, etc...like a switch in your brain, waiting to flip, then something triggers it, and the brain releases endorphens, which in turn get mixed with momentary aggression and testosterone surge and they snap...
what are your thoughts on that?

When it comes to nature Vs. nurture my opinion is that nature matters and nurture matters, with the balance going toward nurture. I know a number of people that have a strong history of alcoholism in their family and are very strict with their drinking; They don't want to fall into a trap they they are predisposed. You could snatch a perfectly "normal" child from a family and put them into an abusive environment and they would most likely emerge from their environment damaged.
I'll give you an example with adults. During WWII the US Army conducted studies on the experiences of soldiers and they discovered most riflemen didn't fire their weapon in an engagement. They also found that crew served weapons almost always fired. Their conclusion was the close cooperation and moral support of having two or three men next to you reinforced the "will to act." That's neither here nor there but the government realized they needed to train the rifleman better. Today, over 90% of riflemen fire during an engagement. How you are nurtured in your culture matters most for the vast majority of people.

I'll relate a story of my own, when I was in the OHNG we were required to qualify with the shotgun as part of our riot control mission. I would empty the Remington 870 Express in a matter of seconds at the target, all head shots. The range NCO commented, "Nice shootin'" John Wayne." Dehumanizing people to the point where they are nothing more than a silhouette is how the system works.

What are the sample sizes in those twin studies studies?
The fact the military can take infantrymen from a 40% engagement rate to a 90% rate via training over 60 odd years and indoctrination indicates to me that nurture is more important.
Likewise, Cindy and Aimee are night and day twins; We used to joke about them being functionally the same but they are very different people.
