The Best Oats

Okay, I am in the dilemma of which oats to buy.

Right now, as far as I know, the best for me is:

"Quaker Large Flake Oats"
Ingredients: 100% Rolled Oats, Naturally Contains Oat Bran

On their website they say, "Large Flake Oats are not cut before they are rolled to flatten them. These flakes are the largest, thickest variety and therefore require the longest cooking time."

My Questions: 1) Are these the best oats to buy concerning a low glycemic index? If not, what is better?

Thank you very much.

Are these the same as "old fashioned oats"? I didn't know they made a different kind.

Dilemma ?
lol

Any "old fashioned" oatmeal will be fine

Don't be anal with GI
A difference in 1,2 or 5 is negligeable

If you are hardcore, you can get some Steel cut oats... I don't know if it is anymore, but it used to be the rage here :coffee:

I understand that steel cut oats are for mass bulkers as they contain double the calories in the same serving. I guess they have been described as "compact"

well I don't eat the regular stuff, but the steel cut oats I have are for 1/4 cup serving: 150 kcal, 2g fat, 26g carbs (4g fiber), and 4g protien.

Whether oatmeal is rolled, crushed, hammered or jumped up and down on, the nutritional value of the end product is relatively the same. The only difference you will notice is in the cooking times. The larger flaked, rolled-oat, variety will take the longest to cook. The larger flake will also have a lower glycemic index rating. Approximately one-third of each whole grain is the bran portion and is therefore high in fibre.

I use Quaker Large Flake Oatmeal with a bit of water and then in the microwave for 4 minutes on medium. Add a bit of milk and that's it. Some people add salt during the cooking but I think there is enough salt in foods to begin with.
