Texas to open fastest U.S. highway: 85 mph limit

Damn, its 55 in Maine! I think its 65 somewhere in the state, but no where that I travel.

Can I limit speed?

I know Montana used to have an unlimited speed limit that was reduced to a "reasonable speed" law after the feds eliminated the 55 mph speed limit; Shelagh's lead foot loved it.

We all drive 90 anyways, might as well make it legit.

I hate leaving TX because the speed limit makes it feel like i'm never going to get where I'm going.

my husband hit 120 testing a rental car on I95, he's damn lucky I was asleep otherwise I would have bitched and nagged. :D

Sounds about right. They do everything different there. When i moved there i was astonished at the whole "move over to the shoulder thing to allow others to pass". But , it grows on ya. Good ideas in that state.

Never understood why a big arsed country like the US has such ridiculous speed limits. Once you're on the autobahn in Germany / Mainland Europe you can blitzkrieg the left hand lane at 100mph (160kph) plus.

Big boys' rules but - you lose control of the car & you're pretty much fucked.

You've obviously never been to CA. Our speed limit is usually 65-70 MPH, but you're lucky if you are moving more than 25 MPH since it's rush hour for about 18 hours of the day.

I was there a few years ago and got behind a car and it freaked me out when they hit the shoulder in front of me. Once the third one did I was like "I like this". Texas is pretty cool.

when does this occur,Im coming to texas next week and for the last few days of my trip Im renting a mustang and want to enjoy it.

I think it's an excellent move. The speed limits were set for "average" automobiles with primitive steering and brakes in the 1950-60s, and the scientific statistical fact is that a 2010 Ford is probably much safer on the road at 100mph (shorter stopping distance, better handling and accident avoidance, etc), than a '65 Plymouth at 50mph. Texas is a state where PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY is the rule; not laws and lawyers and government being a nanny babysitter. If a driver in TX thinks a '78 Pinto with bald tires and loose front end, can go 85, and he/she crashes, he/she will learn the hard way that he/she made a mistake. If he/she is wise, and drives the car at a speed safe for what it is, and doesn't want to go 85, that's fine... Just don't DARE creep along at 49 in the left lane, or he/she will be run off the road to learn some manners....
