Terror Attacks at 30-Year Low

TERROR ATTACKS AT 30-YEAR LOW
BBC | 4/30/04 | BBC

US government figures suggest that terrorist attacks have fallen to the lowest level for more than 30 years.

The annual report records a slight fall in the number of international attacks last year and a dramatic decrease in the number of victims.

The report says that less than half the number of people lost their lives in such attacks last year compared with the year before.

However, most of the violence in Iraq has not been included in the figures.

The US government routinely labels many attacks on coalition forces as terrorism, but these do not fit within the report's definitions.

Progress

Nevertheless, the State Department coordinator for counter-terrorism, Cofer Black, said there had been significant progress since the US declared a war on terror in the wake of the 11 September attacks.

He said that last year there had been unprecedented cooperation between the United States and foreign countries to defeat terrorism.

The report goes out of its way to praise the work of Saudi Arabia in fighting terror in the wake of two major attacks in the country last year.

The State Department says the attacks galvanised the Saudi government into action, although the clear implication is that Saudi Arabia was not doing enough before then.

The report also criticises some familiar targets.

Iran and Syria are among the countries still condemned as state sponsors of terror.

Such state sponsors, argues the report, provide a critical foundation for terrorist groups.

whhaaaa??? i thought the democrats were saying the war on terror was a complete failure. i thought the democrats were saying we are now more unsafe than ever. i thought the democrats said attacking the terrorists would just anger them more and make them more eager to attack us.

whaaaa???

i guess they were wrong. surprise! surprise! imagine that, democrats being wrong? who ever would have thought?

more good news for america is just more bad news for democrats.

they are all in Iraq giving the US a run for its money....Just think if we devoted all those resources in Iraq to finding the people responsable for 9/11...

giving the US a run for its money? we are showing restraint over there...they havent seen what our military is capable of doing.

Soldiers in Iraq would beg to differ...especially the dead or wounded ones.

Again, they are not facing terrorism. They are facing resistance. Polish Jews fighting back against the Nazis, were they terrorists?

for real.

here's something that sort of stood out

The figures do not include attacks considered to be domestic terrorism in which foreigners weren't among the victims.

So those statistics are kind of misleading. The terror attacks in Indonesia or Colombia and in India and Pakistan and Ireland etc are not taken into account.

I will concede that international terrorism APPEARS to be on the decline... FOR ONE YEAR. If the war on international terrorism is supposed to take 30 or 40 years, then one year isn't really much of a trend.

OWNED BY THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION. :D

Just like the rest of us....

I guess that's including today's attacks on police stations in Iraq?

This was brought up by the Bush Admin not too long ago and painfully batted down.

Oh, this is the same post lol.

30 year low? How about 20 year HIGH and near double the number reported!

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The State Department acknowledged Thursday it was wrong in reporting terrorism declined worldwide last year, a finding used to boost one of President Bush's chief foreign policy claims -- success in countering terror.

Instead, both the number of incidents and the toll in victims increased sharply, the department said.

If you are still sore tomorrow from having your thread shoved back up your ass, you might try some 1% cortisone cream.

We salute you, young Mr. Croweatinggoofball Man.

ok, sorry people, but i did not have a free moment all day today. i apologize for not posting on your fucking schedules

umm...you people act like i wrote this article that is nearly 2 months old. you also act like this is somehow good news that terrorism hasnt decreased much. last i checked, it affects every last one of us here, regardless if we, or our loved ones, were hurt or killed in their activities. just look at what it does to gas prices.

regardless of whether or not this article was false, there has been remarkable progress in the war on terror; dismantling the taliban, closing the terrorist camps there, capturing/killing top al qaeda members, receiving help from pakistan and saudi arabia, ousting sadam hussein, showing some progress in the first arab democratic country in the region, further destabalizing iran, new international awareness and cooperation on the war on terror, etc.

regardless, this will not hurt bush, and this will not put lurch..err..i mean, john kerry in office. it will not win back the senate for democrats, and it will not win back the house. liberalism will continue to self destruct, like it has been for the past several years, regardless of whether or not any more reports come out like this.

and to think i was scared arguing with some of you mental midgets...hah :mix:

Dude, have you like read this thread?

You had your own horseshit re-inserted, and the best you can come up with is: " there has been remarkable progress in the war on terror"

Are you living on the same planet as the rest of us?

umm....if we didnt do anything all of the above would still be actively plotting against and attacking us. do you think it would have been better to just leave them alone?

so, you're meaning to tell me it would have been better to have left osama bin laden, the taliban, al qaeda, saddam hussein, etc up to business as usual? riggghhhhtttt....

By trying to defend your original posts you only strengthen the arguments against you. As you get a little older and gain some wisdom, you will learn when to fight and when to flee.

I suggest SunTsu's Art of War. You will learn or perrish.

And yet terrorist attacks are UP, Osama still runs free, American soldiers have been caught torturing Iraqi prisoners and may in fact have been ORDERED TO , Iraq has a good possiblility of rejecting democracy IN FAVOR of another military government, no WMD's have yet been found, and the Bush administration is caught in a bold faced lie to the world. Plus the world now has a new angst against the USA. While there may have been progress, does it outweigh the steps backwards?

You're an idiot. You continue to view this simply as a political war between the left and right, open your eyes and take off the blinders. This WILL hurt Bush, most definately. Bush has been a failure in most of his ventures in life, his Presidency isn't going much better. It's time to give someone else a shot.

I am a Republican, and I voted for Bush, but I will vote for Kerry in November; not because I am now a democrat (I don't even LIKE Kerry), but because I think Bush (and his administration) has handled his job very poorly. Not everyone speaking out against Bush or voting for Kerry is aligned with the Democrats.

I am man enough to admit my mistakes. Bush is not, and now we know that neither are you. Grow a pair and people will respect you more in the future.

K for you.

Poink, I disagree with your ideology in most cases but you make some good points on various topics and have always seemed like a reltively intelligent guy. You called out various people on this thread using the ridiculous claims in the Bushie article, now that it has been exposed as fraudulent, grow up and admit your mistake and move on. Lots of others on here have made similiar mistakes when a story first comes out including me. You will garner much more respect by admitting a mistake than you will pathetically grasping for some justification.

You are sick if you think that I endorse or like terror.

I just believe that the policies of this administration absolutely beg for it. They are the dream team for OBL and OBL has the dream team for their financial investments and holdings.
