Tanita Body Fat Scales

Which Tanita scales are they talking about? There are consumer and physician-grade scales and they are different. Neither are more accurate than the tank though imo.

I've used their Body Comp Analyzer (1500$ to the Doc) and I can tell you that the results vary greatly depending on what time of day, how much you've eaten, amount of water you've taken in, before/after workout, takin a big piss, etc. I've seen variation's of around 4% depending on these variables. The company states in product literature that there is an accepted variation of +/- up to 5%.

I've found the only way to accurately measure PROGRESS (not exact bf to the .01%, not going to happen on these scales) is to duplicate the way you test each and every time. IE first thing in the morning, no water/food/exercise or something like that. It's a lot more fun to run 5 miles, be super dehydrated, and then test I know, but not a true measurement.

hope that helps

I have one of those as well and it says my BF is 12% higher than it is actually. I was pretty suprised and I have emailed the company and they of course did not reply to me. I have tried using it when hydrated, right after a workout, all times of the day and evening and it is way different each and everytime. I tried to find out some info on it, as if it actually uses the electrical current method or just uses the mathmatical formula.

I posted this last month on a post.....

I'm not sure of your build and this is not a flame
I've been going to a bod Pod every three weeks starting in august and my Tanita even on athlete mode is not even close, so last time I went to the bod pod I took my My scale with me....when I got on the calibrated bod pod scale I was 185.4 on my scale I was 185 so the scale IMO is good.....
the bod pod reading which is in line with the last one was 12.4%bf
the scale was.......18.5% WTF I changed it from athlete mode to regular mode and I was 27%...lol. So I called Tanita and spoke to customer service
she could not answer me why ? she had a Tec call me back
I gave him all my stats 5'-6" 185.8 12.2%bf 163.8lbs lean mass 22lbs fat
I shared my last 3 bod pod readings...My answer was I was outside the range for thier scales and it states that they are not calibriated for Body Builders.
I then asked about their IronMan linem He was very cool and told me not to waste my money on the Ironman because it would not give me an accurate reading eather. He told me he was a cardio athlete and he goes to the bod pod him self and the scales are very close, but they are not calibrated to someone with a large amount of muscle mass as a body weight %.

PS I'm going to the bod pod tomarrow I'm 194 this morning on my Tanita, and my caliper readings are very close to where they were last month, I'll be taking my scale with me and report my findings

hey thanks for the info!

someone else suggested that at the very least, i could fix a baseline to at least make sure i'm heading in the right direction.

i've been as low as 7% in my life and recently as high as as 22%+.

right now i'm around 14 -15% @ 223.

my goal is to weigh 220 at 8 or 9% by April.

ps - now that i know how to give k, i just gave you some.

I had an Tanita Ironman. Piece of crap. The LED broke 2 months after I bought, and they wouldn't replace it. Like other people said, you are better off using the mirror.

I love mine.

I use it at exactly the same time every time I use it: Immediately after my wo and before wo shake, late afternoon.

I have no idea how accurate it is, but it gives me a great idea where I'm at relative to that same time the day before.

Oh, the the weight scale measures to within .5lbs.

I've been saying this for 3 yrs. They're finer if you're a runner; not a BB'er. The % change is fairly accurate. If you consistently measure 18% then consistently measure 14% 2 months later the 4% change is close.

Not accurate one bit...like dial tone stated...no use in the body building community at all...maybe to gauge if you dont mind a 4-5% error...

do they work?

Company claims their scales are more accurate than Hydrostatic Weighing...

Yes. The higher end models geared for athletes are the ones to go for. they usually run around 90$ or higher
