Tabata You Challenge!! Big K Hits!!

Here's the deal. I'm putting out a new challenge. It will take 4 minutes of your time. It will not screw with any program you are on right now (so no "I'm going to do this as soon as I am done with my 5x5 so I don't mess things up" excuses). You don't even need to go to the gym if you have the equipment at home.

Details:

Option 1) You will preform a 4 minute Tabata set of 60 lb SHOP using a barbell. Your max reps must be higher than 18 and you min reps can go no lower than 10.

Option 2) You will preform a 4 minute Tabata set of thrusters with 25 lb dumbbells. Your max reps must be more than 16 and your min reps must be no lower than 10.

Here is a good link to doing a Tabata set. It even includes thruster basics if you are unfamiliar with them.

Post up when you are done, listing your exercise choice and your max and min reps. If you make the minimums you will get a 100% karma hit. If you go higher you get 110%.

This is on the honor system, but videos of the workout including the aftermath are appreciated.

Take the challenge. Man the fuck up. It wont hurt your program. It will suck. You will have something to brag about when you are done. Oh, and that cool feeling on the side of you might feel on the side of your face when your are done is probably the floor.

Will do tonight. I'll also post a video. SHOP is your ultracool way of saying standing overhead press right? One problem though: my gym has carpeting on the floor so I won't be able to cool my face down on it :(

EDIT: one question: what do you mean by the max and minimum reps thing? I think I know what you mean but I want to clarify: I need at least one set with 18 reps in it in 20 seconds, and no set can be lower than 10 reps right?

Well I did the challenge. The problem was I literally didnt have enough endurance to get 10 reps consistently on all sets. I got 22 and 21 on the first two sets but it dropped after that. I failed to get 10 one set then switched to push press, which was actually a better cardio workout anyway. Also because I was timing myself I got more rest then I should of, instead of 4 minutes it was 4:35!!!!!!!!!! Is there a way to time yourself better? I had a 20 second timer on my watch and for breaks I just set it and let it go for 10 seconds. But then I had to reset it and hit it again which added up. I'll post up my video tomorrow

OK 50% k hit for trying.

SHOP = Standing Overhead Press

What I mean by the max and min reps is that you need AT LEAST 18 reps in one set AND NO LESS than 10 in any other.

B-

yeah I figured that out about the max and minimum reps. Is there a better way to time yourself though? Like I said I switched as fast as I could but it still ended up 4 minutes and 35 seconds. I'm probably going to do it again today though with the 25lb thrusters, and I should be working out with a friend today so he can time me.

The best bet is to have someone else time you. Also never let go of the implement. If you are doing thrusters, leave the DB's on your shoulders or resting on the bench, but never let go of them. With the SHOP, keep the weight on your chest, or in the rack with your chest under it and hands on it ready to go.

ah great idea I let in on the rack each time that burned precious time

So only one taker....

I'm a bit shocked. I thought this place was made up of some hard core mother fuckers.

btw, I did it again last night with burpees (also known affectionately as 8-count bodybuilders). Definitely the hardest tabata I've done. BBlazer would you mind adding it as a challenge, with 8 reps in the max set and 5 reps in the minimum set?

I would try this, but there's been quite a bit of sand in my twat lately :(

Someone should do this with 95 pound front squats

I'll do it....with 225 pound front squats:chomp::chomp::chomp::chomp::chomp: :evil::evil::evil: Lol jk I'll do it with 95 lb front squats though. SL I've heard a tabata done honestly (ie you work to the max of your potential on each set.....PUT OUT!!!!!) will flush the sand out of anyone's vagina mighty fucking quick

You need the K to make up for the losses I am going to give you this football season.

I suggest you do this daily.

so what do you think about the burpees? Could you add that as a 3rd option? I've been procrastinating on the videos but I have one from the shop and one doing burpees I'll post up soon

Burpees are OK, but I want to talk with a friend about rep ranges. They lack the weight component that I think really adds to the vomit factor. Not saying they are bad, just out of my area.

I'm just gonna say out of my experience the exercises that make you puke the most are the ones without weight. I've puked quite a few times from exercise, and usually it's from a really hard run. But those burpees (as long as you do them as hard as you can like with the weights) were far harder than the btn squat thrusters, and I wasnt far off puking.

So I went to my Gym today planing on doing the thruster challenge, but my free-weight area was backed up like a truck stop shitter. So I decided to try this out on an eliptical (seeing as this is my cardio day anyway). After a 5 minute warm up, I cranked up the resistance and went for it. I have to say I was a bit skeptical at first, but by the 5th "set" of 20 seconds on I was wondering how I was going to finish. I ended up repeating the whole 4 minute drill 4 times with 1 minute in between. Of course I had to lower the resistance each time in order to keep going, and by the last set I could barely get off the machine, but it took me 20 minutes to fully catch my breath and 45 minutes later I can still feel my lungs burning. I feel like I got a better "burn" than my regular 45 minute interval session. I am officially hooked.....

Great job!

The tabata claims another victim!

Well I never got my videos up should have but I moved off to college and my parent's video camera stayed behind, with all my footage on it:( Oh well it would have been a good video too because especially on the burpees one I was definitely in some serious pain at the end

I'd love to see a little more action here!

Time to stop curling in the squat rack and give this puke fest a try!

I think tabatas are great I got a 291 out of 300 on first army pt test and I'd say doing some tabatas beforehand defintiely helped.....They will continue to be in my routine thank you bblazer:D

I'm planning on hitting either front squats or thrusters today depending on what's available when I get to the gym. The only thing that I'm worried about is the distance from the weights to the men's room (I don't want to puke on anything/anyone) lol!!!

I will try a week of Tabata 4 day split routine with 1 mile warm up and cool down jog.

Shoulder
Shoulder Press
Lat Raise
Front Raise
Rev Fly

Leg Day
Squat
Leg Ext
Leg Curl
Calf

Day off

Chest
Bench
Incline
Pull-Over
Fly

Back
Dead Lift
Row
Pull-Down

I might start a log to tell you guys how it goes.

solution: bring a bucket:D

Jesse: Wait what I don't understand your routine? So you're doing that routine and doing a tabata at the end of each workout or what?

bblazer: thanks much appreciated:)

No the whole routine will be tabata. So each work out will be 12-16 mins long, and a fuck load of reps. Mind you my weights may only be 50% of my 5rm.

I'm puking just thinking about this one!

Please video if you can. I have got to see this, and the 5 min of carnage afterward!

yeah jesse just give it 100%. The whole point of tabatas is you got to be honest with yourself, put out 100% the whole time for some puking! Have a bucket ready

Did a thrusters tabata session yesterday, spent over two hours making a timer just to find out there were already some in you tube, look for tabata training timer on youtube, mine is the black one with white numbers.
I did it with a set of 5lbs dumbbells, yeah, I know... by the end I was light headed and a little dizzy but that was like 20 minutes after because right after the work out my legs were hurting like hell, pain lasted for so long, I had a "hard pump" on them, it wouldn't go away, couldn't even bend my knee, not to mention the burning in my throat/lungs for breathing so heavy.

Post may be a bit old, but are you bro's still open on this?

Looking to start Tabata, with an empty barbell in order to shred some BF%....

One question, what is the "rest period" between the sets?

Thanks
H

The details are can be seen by clicking on the link in the first post. But to answer this question, your rest is 10 seconds.

And yes, there are K hits for finishers.

Ok, in "warm up" to the Tabata dumbbell thrusters I plan to do, I performed an empty barbell complex today after a chest workout....

The barbell complex had six different exercises in it and I "only" managed 2 sets, after which I was toast (close to the all important puke), I think it was the 50m sprints at the end that did me in...

Will hopefully be doing the dumbbell thruster Tabata workout tomorrow. Will let you know how it goes. I think it is going to be fun ;)

H

Erm, the workout is harder than pronouncing the name....

Got through set four, only way to continue after that was to swap the work and rest times around....So, finished 8 sets, but not really...Conditioning is way off where I thought it was. This routine makes you take an honest look at yourself!!

Will continue until I can finish 8 full on sets and then up the poundages...
