Sugar Alcohols??

Can someone please shed some light on how bad sugar alcohols are for you. I see some foods that may have no sugar but 15g of sugar alcohols. I was wondering if that would end up being about as bad as eating sugar and what the negative effects are....thanks

I was wondering the exact same thing. I see alot of protien bars with like 2 grams of sugar but then 29 grams of sugar alcohols.

The body actually does not digest sugar alcohols at all. THey tavel straight to your colon and if you collect enough of them, you will experience uncomfortable bloating, cramping, diarrhea, GAS...etc. Try to stay away from them. I can tell you some REALLY horrible stories about sugar alcohols ..... Research a little bit more on the net... there's plenty of info. Just stick to chewing gum and nothing else, aspecially if there's 15g per serving.

Not all sugar alcohols are created equal. Xylitol and Erythritol are considered safe. Most of the meal replacement bars, among other things have Isomalt, which is a Maltitol derivative. Maltitol will make you shit yourself, and it also causes blood sugar spikes in most people (yea, similar to sucrose... so much for sugar free). Sorbitol is another that I don't touch, for the same reasons as I don't touch Maltitol. (Sorbitol is quite common in sugar free syrups.)

Personally I stick to Erythritol, it's only .2 calories per gram and has little to no effect on blood sugar.

So..if I had syrup that has 30 calories, 15g sugar alcohols..

are you telling me that it technically is 0 calories because the sugar alcohols are not digested?

Not exactly. All sugar alcohols are digested to a degree, some more than others. The calorie count on the label should reflect the actual caloric value.

you still cant ignore the total caloric value of what u are eating..

I can't eat the sugar alcohol because I bloat up huge and have SEVERE diarrhea if I eat them. They have as many calories as eating the sugar. I would prefer just eating the real sugar to that crap. 15 g of sugar or 15 g of sugar alcohol = candy bar and not good food. IMO.
