Standing calf raises hits them hard for me. They recover quicker than most muscle groups so u could train them more frequently. I know a guy that has had trouble with his and I think he hits them 3 days a wk and they are significantly bigger. I'll run hills sometimes for intervals and that will thicken them up too.

That's really interesting.. I'm all about seated calf raises and have never gotten great results from standing.. Just make sure to perform strict reps.. Try going from full stretch (bottom
Of the ROM).. Half rep pause.. Then finish the full rom with a nice squeeze and let it down slowly. Good luck bro I know how it feels to have small calves.. Hit them hard & consistently and they'll grow.

Put on a weight belt load it with a couple 45s or whatever you can handle stand on the edge of a bench and crank out as many sets of standing calf raises as you can at about 12-15 reps you won't be able to walk the next day its wonderful do it at the end of leg day

There are so many exercises to do for claves...standing, seated, donkey calf raises, one leg raises holding a DB, on a leg press, calf sled, standing calf with a BB, all kinds of things you can do to shock the calves, hit them 2x a week, two exercises per session, one session do all sets 20 reps, next session go heavy for 10-8 reps, keep switching it up...keep them guessing!

Thanks heaps guys, quality info ill definitely take into action. One question though, with your standing calf raises, are you raisibg from a flat surface i.e. floor or using a platform of some kind for more range of motion?

You can do either or...off a platform you get more stretch of course.

Heavy standing barbell calf raises. These are not just good for calfs. Do them from a rack and not a cage so you can incorporate a short walk out. I also like explosive good mornings, clean/snatch grip High Pulls, and seated calf raises when I am too tired to do anything else or just for a change.

Every other week, at the end of leg day, I push my car 1/4 mile while my training partner steers. Then turn it an come back. It has done wonders for my hams and calves.

Plus, sets of standing calf raises twice a week and my calves aren't lagging as much as they used to.
