On average a women needs 21% bodyfat to be in optimal health. Meaning there is enough body created fat and fat intake to: insulate organs, keep a consistant body temperature, protect against disease (the body can actually store disease like substances in fat cells until the body can discreet them on its own), have a healthy pregnancy, aid in breastfeeding, sustain hormone levels after birth, and protect against osteoporosis. I'm sure there are more that aren't coming to me right now. There is also a risk if you sustain under 18% bodyfat of being vitamin deficient (no matter gender or height). I think in A,D,E and maybe K.
Just wanted to share -I am certainly not saying we should all be over 21% - lord help us. Athletes have routine blood tests to ensure everything is functioning properly, we should too - especially if using hormones. Most importantly know your body and if something doesn't feel right, don't ignore it.
On to the real subject:
The difference in BC and steroids or HRT is that there is tons of research done on them. We know very little about long term effect of HRT or steroids. Mostly, because they can't be patented, thus not making money, thus not researched.
All in all, steroid use (legal or illegal), the pill or HRT is a very personal choice. I'm not sure someone taking HRT is all that much different than someone taking steroids. Neither are used for life or death medical concerns - but rather used for a better quality of life, comfort, vatality as we age, and vanity. I'm sure we all recall our mothers or grandmothers living in a time where symptoms of peri or menapause and PMS were considered a women's duty to endure. Don't throw eggs at me ladies...I'm not taking sides. I simply believe it is a personal choice and one needs to be aware of options and risks no matter what supplements they are taking. Know there are more risks associated with illegal steroids than bc or HRT. But also know we really don't know enough about any of them to be conclusive.
