starting point for cleans

do you pick the weight up off of the ground every rep? or is it supposed to be done with the weight below the knees? I assumed that you just pick up the weight once, and clean it from below the knee level. which is the correct way to perform these?
 
Hey there PC! I've always pulled the weight off the ground for my cleans. And on doing that everytime...well...It just depends on if you want to fully clean the bar everytime. (I am referring to either doing just a clean....or a clean and press). Cleans are so much fun....I love them! They are a great full body exercise and really help increase strength!
 
cleans are awesome. I guess I have been doing them half ass. that said, I went up to 155. I hope I dont have to lower the weight when I finally do these properly. oh, and I just do the clean, not the clean and press. if I press, I do push presses.
 
You can do hang cleans, or do them off the floor. Personally I feel that i am stronger and have better form off the floor so that is the way I do them. I dont do presses except on one of my warmup weights(cause it is not that heavy). I would say to try the two different methods and see which one you like best. Off the floor you can always reset which I think is better, just like with deadlifts...you put it on the floor each rep(unless your bodybuilding, then you may not need to if your not going heavy and if your doing a lot of reps).
 
2 different deals almost...

hang clean=stand with the weight and clean from your knees

power clean=clean the weight straight from the ground.

we do hang clean because our form isn't the best on power clean but I believe that you're normally stronger from power clean.
