hi,

i hate squats and deadlifts...!!!!!!!

Squats hurt my Lowerback and so do deadlifts not a OUCH..!!!! pain but muscle worked pain.??? so i dont do them but people tell me they are I important...what do u guys think, do u do them... should i do them...???

dave

both

When they start to irritate my back, I just back off abit until its up to full strength again.

I think deads in particular make your lower back as strong as hell, and that in itself is very important, nevermind the work it does on your hams.

you just have to be careful and think about what you are doing and what it is doing to you

as Clint Eastwood said, "A mans got to know his limitations"

I do both. You can't be a pussy about either one. I have had two surgical operations that are both in the areas trained on deadlifts and squats, but I still do them. You need to have a serious reason to not squat or deadlift, for example, you don't have arms or legs. I suppose that would be about the only reasons I would find not to do both. If you don't squat or dead then you are already making your muscle gaining process that much harder than it already is. Fuck it, if it's hard then it works, plain and simple and that is why most people avoid these types of exercises.

I dunno..i do DL but not squat because of the lenght of my legs they feel ackwad. they are both good basic exercises. BUT as a bodybuilder they are NOT vital. you can build both a great back and legs without either of them. its different for strenght athletes im sure. but dont get discouraged just because you dont do them. as long as you work hard in the gym, and have other good exercises you will grow.

i squat as i hear its a great compound movement...maybe i dont need too...it makes my butt big :(

dont DL though....dont know why...just dont

That's great...lol. I'm gonna try squats for the first time tomorrow, I'm kinda psyched. But if I start to notice it "makes my but big," I'm done :D Hehe.

Thanks Dave and good luck on the squats. Squats are a love hate thing for me. I hate trying to get "into" the actual workout, but once I am in then I am loving the pain. I think you will be pleasantly surprised with how well your body responds to doing squats. Squats will make everything grow better, not just your legs. They are a great exercise, if you do them intensely enough, for releasing natural testosterone in your system.

right, i am sorry, but if u dont dealift AND squat.....to me u r just a pretty boy weightlifter!
i am a pounder, not a pumper, a man not a boy....no i am not a powerlifter or a bodybuilder, i am the in the guy in between a bit of both.
But BB should def dead and squat!
they ARE the two best exercises for size and strength!!

Unless u have a back injury, you should perform each lift.
i will deadlift, squat and bench press 'till i stop liftin'(when i physically cant ne more)

I squat about 3 times a week. Man, even though I'm at 6'2" and rather long-limbed, I love squatting. In fact, now that I broke the 250x20 barrier, I believe that they're my favorite exercise. (Following the 20-rep squat trend, hahah.) Mr. Muscle, have you ever tried squatting with your feet at or outside shoulder-width? I always found it more comfortable that way as, due to poor hamstring flexibility, if my feet are inside shoulder-width my squats tend to look like modified good mornings.

As for deadlifts, I did them once, and they put an incredible amount of pressure on my still-growing spinal column. I couldn't sleep that night due to the discomfort and pain, so I decided to drop TBDL's from my routine. I do the stiff-legged kind, though, but that's really not the same...

Dethspell: yeah, when i do squat that is how i position my feet. but it has a wrong feel to it. i want to work on my outer sweep..and when i go so wide with my feel i feel like im only hitting the teardrop. so im gonna try some close stand hack squats instead.

Both, but I cycle the lifts. I dont train both at 100% intensisty, only one at a time. Its hard to push your poundages up on both deads and squats at the same time (especially the more advanced you become). Right now Im training for a 600lb Dead, so I am hitting my squats at a lower intensity level- around 70% of max.

GREAT!!! Take the two biggest muscle building exercises known to man and scrap them...throw them out the window!!!! Suck it up and do them man..sure...you will hurt...but you will grow from them. I'm on a personal mission to squat over 6 with no help (spot, wraps, suit, belt, etc...) and to dead in the mid 8's as close to the same way as possible. You know what? If I even come close to these feats...I'll be a much bigger and stronger man than I am now!!!

Squat and deadlift...you will grow from them. Your back hurts? It will grow stronger...it will take time...but it will grow stronger...I promise.

If you don't do squats or deadlifts then you are a pussy and you really don't want to train. You may hate them at first but you will learn to love them. And Im not talking about the half ass pussy squats when guys don't go all the way down. When you squat you go low or don't even bother!!!!!

Make your workouts intense, Do squats, do deadlifts and you WILL grow!!!!!

both (not on the same day of course).

i used to hate them. hate them. but now they'e my favorite lifts. it's good to push around that much weight still keeping in mind that they're both technical lifts. great to have a lift that you really have to think about to get right, but which you still getto move a lot of weight.

hell yea do them!!!!!!!!! they are a total body exercise, you gotta do legs and deadlifts just feelsoooooooooooooooooooo good.........hahahaha

I do both and so should you. You're lower back is weak and it you need to bring it's strength up or else you're asking for an injury. Start out light with no belt on both exercises and work your way up. Your lower back strength will shoot up in no time and you won't get those pains there anymore.

hi,

i have been starting with 50kg is that ok if i do any more i get bad back for 2 weeks or so and i never use belts ever at the gym on any exercise...?

d

just thought i'd add my experience with squats and dl's. i used to only do leg presses and dl's off a shrug machine. i was progressing fine but decided to start doing ass to floor 20 rep squats and real dl's. i went from 185lbs to 197lbs in the last month. guess they really worked for me.

Are you asking me? I'll give my input anyway. Start at whatever weight you're comfortable with. You should try and break parallel with the squats but don't let your ass drop all the way to the floor as it puts extra stress on the knees IMO and can lead to future knee problems.
With deadlifts (regular), grap the bar with a wide grip (when I used to do 'em my hands were too close together which led to more stress onthe left side of my back than on the right and it caused back pains on that side so I had to back off of 'em for a while and figured out that that was the problem), bend at the knees and try to keep your back concave (jut stomach forward). I'm still trying to master keeping my back concave - it's harder for some than others IMO. Hope that helps.

There is a difference between saying that you don't deadlift EVERY week and saying that you do not deadlift. I do not deadlift every week...but I do deadlift. I also box squat, flip cars, flip tires, etc....:)

Be a man and do squats!!!!!

I do squats every monday and get huge results from them. Who calls themselves a real weightlifter or bodybuilder that doesn't do squats. Squats should be included in your weekly leg day no matter what......I promise the results you will get are tremendous. It also helps to strengthen your back and other muscle groups that contribute to the lift. Lady

hi,

The Lady has spoken and i will do as my told..yeah i did some deads and suqats the other day it did feel good i liked them so i will do them every week but i dont where a belt i dont like them...!!! does this i have to be extra carefull.?

dave

I did pretty good and had really good results w/out doing either. I'm 233 now and started at 180 2 years ago. Personally i started out doing both but squats were killing my knees and deads were killing my back. So i stopped both, and have met others that say the same thing that they had to stop too because of the stress on the knee joint and pains in the lower back area.
