Soulmates.......do they exist or not???

You hear a lot about them now-a-days....two people who are destined to be together, and will somehow always find their way to each other....


Thoughts?
 
are you unhappy with your wife/marriage and trying to woo velvett?



just wondering.. cuz that's the first thing that comes to my mind.. i don't know why..
 
I'am not so sure soulmates exist and if they did they could be on the other side of the world. Not much of a chance to find them. I do believe we have the ability to fall in love with different people. Its a way overrated term. IMO
 
ABSOLUTELY! Soulmates do exist...just can't lose hope or settle. When you look them in the eye you will know that whatever sacrifices you have made have been worth it.

I would rather find my soulmate at 30, and have 40 years of perfection.....then settle at 18 or 19 and have 50+ years of mediocrity.
 
I thought I found my soulmate, but she tricked me. Now my only true soulmate is my right hand...THAT will always be loyal to me.
 
I have been married to mine for a very long time. Hannibal hit the nail right on the head - NEVER settle.

I saw Serendipity last night and the soul-mate thing was the central element in the movie. Also saw Vanilla Sky and am going to post a question on that as well. Sky was totally not what I thought it would be.......

Soul Mates?!?

No, I believe in soul mates about as much as I believe that Prince Charming is going to ride in on his Harley and sweep me off my feet.

Relationships, will only be as good as you want them to be.....trust, honesty, communication, attraction, and respect will always be key elements in life long loves...

But then again....what the hell do I know?!? :)

Actually Decem IS right - sort of.....I wanted him to read the post and tell me why he married someone else. I thought I was he soulmate. He had me at nugga and I am just heartbroken.....

FFOS - you can be my new sweetheart if you wish...
 
Soul mates? maybe...who knows? I think there are a bunch of people that you will be equally happy/in love with. If there was only 1...I don't think we'd ever really find them that often no?
 
I actually believed it for a while..... not anymore.

Now I know that I am destined to be alone. It is ok. Doesn't hurt me anymore. I have everything that a person could want: beautiful children, my health and youth and the freedom to do with my time what I want, loving family and good friends.... soul mate? NOPE, none exists for me.

No man is capable of returning the love that I am capable of giving and I will never again even try to give it.
 
Hmmmm..I have conflicting views...on one hand - I can see how there would be just ONE person that you would be happiest with, using the Serendipity analogy...the matching glove.

Now - on the other hand - I believe that there are others that you can be happy and content with....you might think they ARE the soulmate because you really have no other reference point....so maybe you ARE happy with the non-soulmate...I dunno
 
No, no sugarplumb it is ok. I have merely accepted the fact that I will NEVER EVER give my heart to another man again. The last man that I gave it to will die with it, even if he lives to be 110.

Will I lust others? Absolutely.

Will I crave others? Undoubtedly.

Will I share my free time with a man from time to time? Surely

But they will all merely be diversions with a pulse. I honestly hope to God that a truly nice guy never crosses my path for I will surely destroy him. Not on purpose, he will know up front not to fall in love.

My children are my first priority.
My whims and desires are next.
Time spent w/family and friends....

Whatever is left over if I FEEL like it will be spent in the company of men. We can laugh and socialize and I am sure that someday I will be strong enough to actually become intimate, but that would be on a purely physical level.... NEVER my heart.

There is no soulmate for me. There never was and there never will be and I for one can accept that. I am not and will not search. Don't want or need one.

I will leave this world the way that I entered it: alone but not unloved.
 
There is NO one soulmate for each person and a soulmate (if you believe in such theory) is not limited to a sexual love relationship.

You can have friends (parents or children even) that are soul mates, same sex, different sex doesn't matter.


It's more about having past lives that have crossed each other before and *that* feeling is having known them before.

Just my take.

Past lives.....interesting topic.

I know WODIN believe is that...he remembers like 6 past lives....he was a llama lover in every one though - so I guess some things never change....

I don't especially believe in the literal Platonic notion of the soulmate. In the Symposium, the character Aristophanes theorizes that every individual is divided as a requirement of incarnation, and that we seek reunion with our other half throughout life. (There is a wonderful rendition of the myth in the song "Origin of Love" in the movie "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," since the Platonic myth supposes the existence of a third sex.)

Nevertheless, I do believe in the soul -- the "psyche"-- and I believe some people animate its passions with eerie power. My rule is always to turn my back and run like hell when I encounter such a person. :) I often see clients who are married to one person but whose "soulmate" is another person.

My ex left me because she thought I wasn't her soulmate. How do you like that? Soulmates can be a real thing but is it an absolute? Nope. It only exists if you create a everlasting loving relationship with work, commitment, and love.

Personally, I think nowadays, people are using it as an excuse to search for the "perfect" person to be with. If your current relationship isn't going the way as you want it, just pull out the excuse for it: "I don't think he/she is my soulmate." The illusion of soulmates can be very conceiving to people who don't want to put the effort in relationships. Before I let myself babble on, soulmates is a novel-like concept among people and people tend to let that concept to diciate their lives.

Sort like believing in Santa Claus, to a certain degree.

I believe that a soul mate is the person that you have those and other things with. I have found mine but that does not mean that he doesn't annoy the shit out of me at times and I him. It also doesn't mean that we didn't have to fight like hell for what we have today - there were some pretty brutal years but no matter how bad things were I could never imagine my life without him.

Very well said...just because you found your soulmate doesn't give you the right to get lazy in the relationship. It is only as good as the effort you make for one another. Also even when you do find that one person...doesnt mean that there wont be times when you get on one anothers nerves, even when you dont mean to. But when things are bad, you still know you will get through it. When you can look at them and just KNOW that everything will be alright. I can imagine that is a very comforting feeling.

Yes Hannibal, it is very comforting but there is also the other side to the coin. Someday one of us will have to go on without the other. I did not really understand what that means until my grandmother died and my grandpa was left to go on alone. You can see when you look in his eyes that something is missing - it is hard to describe. When he passes a part of me will be sad but much of me will feel like having a party as they will be together again.

I truly feel that timing is also a very important factor in a relationship...My "true soulmate" in life, if there is such a thing, I believe I did already meet. However as the years pass, your goals and some of your values change, and we simply were not traveling down the same path. However, he made "footprints" across my heart that I will cherish always.

I believe they exist but I also believe only a very small percentage of people actually meet theirs...why? because they settle or treat sex as just some way to get off and dismiss it as having to mean something..settling, nothing worse in life then always taking the easy route

Just another reason to cherish every second that you have together. And NEVER take one another for granted. Tommorow is never promised to anyone.

I agree...I think I met my soulmate a long time ago. It was a "love at first sight" kind of thing, and when things were going well, all was grand. When things went bad, well...

Someday, I'll get to recapture that euphoria with someone.
 
Once you have reaped the soul of an intellectualy strong individual, you will soon realize that the soul is not something that one can possess outright.

I think that you will be wherever you are meant to be - your personal choices make up the journey itself - but destination will be the same

The only destination that I know I have is the grave. Whatever happens between then and now, I'm kind of comfortably numb right now, not too concerned about it.
 
Yeah... I have been through 3 soulmates so far, paid for grad school for one of em, furnished anothers house, waned the third soulmate off paxil, now she's married to a guy who mows lawns and cleans gutters for a living, they live with his parents..

i dont need any more fucking soulmates.. how about a nice woman who can cook, likes to fuck, looks decent, and isn't needy

in order to qualify as being your soulmate, does sex have to be included in the package?

how about a "spiritual soulmate"? someone who you like to talk to, spend time with, have deep personal feelings for but have no desire to boink them?
 
I disbelieve the idea of soulmates.

I think the properties of human behavior (innate, societal, etc.) encourage people to abuse each other and have short term relationships. Just look at history and you will never find a time when human sexuality was considered peaceful. People effectively look for abuse --- conciously, unconciously, and/or on a higher level.

Monogamy and romanticism are nice sounding ideas. Most people want to believe the world is a complete system in which everyone is entitled to secure happiness. Religion, marriage, monogamy and justice are ideals people cling to in order to maintain sanity in an insecure existance.

Also...

Although my beliefs may seem pessimistic, they paint a more interesting and optimistic picture to me than monogamy, marriage and other constricting ideals.

Although I may seem cynical, I only dismiss contradictory ideas and replace them with consistent and complex new ones.
