This is not right wing philosophy. Islamic fundies are not right wing either, they are theocratic, which, depsite the philosophy of an idiotic attorney general, are not "conservative".

This is authoritarian / statist; using the state to influence behavior deemed "immoral" (drug use).

Both parties have embraced statism inasmuch as it is politically viable. The presence or absence of statism among political parties, and the political affiliations of the assgobblers who did this, does not leigitmize this behavior as "right-wing".

FYI.

Believe me, as someone who has been arrested three times, I empathize with the accused.

I have always thought that it was the right-wing religious fanatics that were the staunchest supporters of these types of laws and the excessive punishment.

I worked with a guy who was a Southern Babtist and he was always going around preaching to everyone, try to get them to come to his church, to save their souls. But this man was so full of hate. I was one of the few that saw it come out. One day I mentioned Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, and some other celebrity. Mark said, "Scum, they're all filthy scum." That was his attitude about anyone that didn't adhere to his beliefs. Kind of like the Islamic Fundamentalists believe that everyone who is not one of them deserves to die.

Damn, Code I don't see how you could be so obtuse...I see this in many of your posts. Both the Law and the exaggerated punishment are what is in question here. I do agree that takeing some herb to school was a stupid risk to take, but unlike you, I don't see how having taken this risk makes him a stupid person. The fact is is that this Texas town is letting their Christian conservative ideals get in the way of what is right and wrong. The problem with Christian conservatives is that they think that if someone breaks the rules preached by the congregation, that they have the right to exile them from the community and use the law to do so. I know I just got off on a rant...people like you just piss me off.

Code does have a kind of RIGID mind in these matters with not much plasticity. It's really typical of people with analytical minds like engineers. I'm around it often. He can't help it, he sees things in very clear black and white.

potentially 5 to 6 years? The law in some Islamic countries will put to death an adulteress or cut the hand off of a starving thief. I guess you're right.
