ok.. starting my cycle soon..worried about getting skin problems. i started on some b5 just to be safe. my skin is pretty clear. i have the usual every now and then break out..often due to that wonderful time of the month and high activity level....plus..the HEAT..uggghh!! ive been using some tea tree oil soap w/ sulfer in it..and some topical cream just to keep things under control. but lately..i think b/c of the heat my skin hasnt been as clear..so i went to the derm today. i asked for something oral cause im tired of the topical bullshit. he prescribed tetricyclin (sp)(antibiotic) i would rather not take an antibiotic but i figured ill hold onto it so when i start my cycle..if i need it, ill pop em. i asked my derm about acutane. i just want my skin to be as clear as possible and i know accutane is the big gun. ull never see a pimple again for years after that stuff. my doc said no way..he wont prescribe it for me. he said my skin looked good but its not good enough for me and thats what matters right!?!? :) are there any other meds out there other than acctutane ..maybe a lil milder. the thing is w/ the antibi... after u stop it..ur skin goes back to the way it was.. w/ accutane thats it, no more probs!! ok.. advice anyone?

You can also either get outside in the sun occassionally or go hit a tanning booth. Dont' get burnt, but it helps a lot for my very oily skin!

Another thing, sort of related is some people get like cold sores from lots of peanut butter. (Lots of natural peanut butter junkies here!) I was getting some nasty cold sore looking things around my mouth from too much peanut butter - I was told its a sensitivity to L-Arginine that I have. You can easily combat it w/ oral and topical L-Lysine (available at most health food stores).

Anyway, good luck!

thanks guys... sassy-- i know about the peanut butter thing..i wont even buy a jar..not ONE b/c it is totally dangerous for me to have that sort of thing in the house..even the natural kind-- ill lose it one night, sit on my couch w/ the jar and a spoon and watch my sex in the city episodes;) . i cant handle the temptation so NO pb for me:bawling: . WL.. im gonna drop u a line-- laters.. oh and SASSY-- I LUV UR KITTY!!! hes precious!

Sulfur soap w/out oil try not to put any kind of oil on broken out areas. Also my Dr. gave me a topical antibiotic Keflex 500mg. capsule that you open and mix w/alcohol or an oily skin astringent. Keep the affected area clean and dry as much as possible even if it sounds obsesive. This summer heat and sweating at the gym doesn't help this common problem. I carry stridex pads w/me and wipe often.

As Sassy suggested, oily skin is often the problem. Another way of drying your skin out is to go swimming (chlorine dries your skin) or putting a little bleach in the tub if you bath rather than shower (does the same as swimming).

If I do this everyday on a cycle I never get skin problems. Skip a day, particularly in hot weather, and I start having problems.

Personally I think that for most people using accutane is like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

I use a topical antibiotic lotion called dalacin T, that way you don't suffer the sides orals have. You have to use it all over the breakout area for about a month as it actually PREVENTS the spots forming, but then it's great.

I too was not one who was born w/beautiful skin....I never had acne as a teen, but It has caught up w/me now...Ive tried it all and my dermat. will not give me Accutane either...this summer my face has been clearer than ever and I never realized it until I read the above posts - but It must be from the chlorine and sun (we just got a pool) also, with a good tan I dont ever wear foundation....I use regular alcohol to clean my face after I wash and benzol peroxide at night and this seems to be working just as good as the 60.00 a bottle creams the dr. prescribed...

I used Accutane in my 20's, because I had cystic acne (the big mountianous painful zits - pizza pie face) and nothing else worked. It's a miracle drug, but it's a VERY BIG gun. There are a number of unpleasant side effects (itchy/achy feeling all over the body and EXTREMELY dry skin - constant nose bleeds and corners of my mouth cracked and bleeding). This was for the entire 5 month cycle.

There are monthly blood tests. Accutane works by using near-toxic levels of vitamin A, so this has to be monitored. You're not even allowed to take multi-vitamins with vit A. They're also monitoring your cholestorol and liver function. You have to sign a waiver saying you're using 2 kinds of birth control because Accutane causes birth defects if taken during pregnancy.

It kept me completely zit free for 5 years, and it was a godsend. After that I've had some pimples and the occasional cyst but not like before. More recently I have had excellent results using Pantothenic Acid (vitamin B5) at 6g (GRAMS) a day.

Thx, I'll tell him how cute he is (again)... My cat is a complete parasite and loves every minute of it! Sometimes if he looks really bored, I'll use him like a barbell - we can do kitty curls, kitty extentions, both front and back kitty squats, kitty busters for triceps and of course, kitty presses! The funny thing is, he sits there and takes it - just does like a "big kitty stretch", I pick him up and we start working out - he just stretches out, purrs and takes it like a cat! LMFAO!

RE: natural peanut butter -- I'm working w/ a holistic nutritionist on my diet - its sort of based on the BloodType diet. I'm an "O" type - so I'm supposed to eat more red meat, chicken is OK, pork is bad, fewer eggs, and interestingly, no peanuts. Pumpkin seeds and walnuts are OK for fat/protein sources, but not peanuts. So I'm substitituting soy nut butter and also almond butter. The soynut butter you can get at the grocery store and both are available at health food stores (almond butter is $$). The soy stuff is not too bad so I do have to watch the sitting in front of Sex & the City w/ a spoon, but it works and I haven't gotten any of the oily cold sore things from it all. Its a nice alternative anyway.

Thanks guys!!i guess im not gonna do the accutane thing cause of all the sides . yes.. im a sun girl. i also tan if i cant get out in the sun but ironically if i tan too much i will break out...i really dont have a skin problem but a solution for the flare ups would be nice:D ERICAALEX : really? keflex 500mg capsules? wow..i didnt know that. i can get those from my job. i think ill try that instead of the orals. can u use it long term? SASSY : OMG... i luv that u luv ur cat sooo much. ok.. how "girlie" did that just sound!?!? LOL. i dont care ..im an animal freak and im not ashamed damn it!! awwwww.. he sounds so adorable. i have 2 little "parasites" at home. the baby (7months) is such a mush!! i never had a kitty like her before. whenever i go home she runs up to me and "asks" me to pick her up. i hold her like u would a baby and just give her tons of kisses!!! she is an absolute doll!! and shes sooo tiny too!! i think she was the runt cause when i adopted her she was just the sorriest looking kitten at the shelter. her sorry ass was dirty, smelly, flea invested, AND shes missin a foot!! yup.. has a lil stump! i saw and her and knew she would be just PERFECT!! lol..so i took her home, cleaned her up.. and shes a happy lil pig now. ummmmmmm luv em!!!!
