Shoulder Injury!?!? What to do? Overcome it??

Hey guys; I've never had a shoulder injury, and I can get to a doctor or specialist for a few days AT LEAST. Was wondering if we could do some
ad-hoc diagnoses and brainstorming!?

To start, I'm 21, almost 6', 155-160lbs. I've been working out for sometime now, but for the last couple months I've been on the 5x5 program.

It looks like: Mon: Legs; Tues:chest/Bis; Thurs: Back Fri: Delt/Tri

My last workout was Friday Dec 3. It was Delt/Tri day... I was doing DB shoulder presses, lat raise, upright row; then Close Grip BP, Skull Crushers, Tri extensions. These aren't new to me, and the weight wasn't anything i haven't done before.

I went to go workout Mon Dec6, but had a bad shoulder pain (might have been there that sun aswell?? ). It's been over a week since i've worked out, and i'm a cripple!!

No problem to raise my left arm to the side, but to raise it forward (or anywhere in front of me), as if i was putting dishes away, or putting on a coat, hurts alot.

I've been taking some advil, that seems to help. Also switching between hot and cold.

Any ideas on what it could be?
or what I can do to fix it?
Can/should I still do anything in terms of working out (other than eating right/abs/cardio? )

Thanks!! Not being able to workout REALLY sucks!
Injuries suck

-I figured i'd post in here as well, as according to the stuff i've researched, shoulder injuries are very common with lifting. I really apperciate it guys!

get used to it.

It's probably bursitis, or as some call it impingment.

rest rest rest. aspirin regimen.

then learn how to work out, without stressing your shoulder.

Humm... any idea how long i need to be off? Or how much rest?

I was working out the same as i always have....

And lastly, can i still workout other parts to some degree, or is any liftning not good? (ex. curls)

I started with shoulder issues at your age. I'm 35 now. Go to a pt that knows weight training and learn to lift. You need to understand what will aggrevate it and how to avoid further damage. Stay away fram anything thats the least bit uncomfortable.

Good luck.

Lay off any exercises that irritate the area. Work around the injury, i.e. legs, abs, forearms, anything that doesn't involve the injured area. I would ice it for 10 mins, heat for 10, back to ice for 10 and once more with the heat for 10, do that a few times a day.

This is a link to a rotary cuff rehab site, it works really well. I use most of the movements before my workouts to warmup my shoulders. I had shoulder problems for years.

Learning how to lift properly is very important. You may think you know how because it's never been an issue before but there is a first time for everything and chances are the weight you use has finally caught up with your shoulder. The best advice I can give you when it comes to form is to keep your shoulders back (behind your chest) all the time, I mean all the time. You should be trying to touch your shoulder blades together, contracting your traps during all your exercise, especially bench pressing. This is where I was making my biggest mistake. Since I have been holding my shoulders back and doing those warm ups I haven't had one problem with my shoulders.

I am by no means an expert in this area, this is just what has worked for me.

Good luck.
