Should I lift with a Shirt?

Grantsdu

New member
Everyone on here seems to bench with a shirt. I have never benched with one. Don't really know anything about them. I'f I'm going to keep competing, would it pay to get one? About hoe much weight it any could I expect it to increase my bench? Inzer the best to get? Any help would be apprciated!!

It depends. If you are competing against other lifters who are using shirts, and you do not, it is rather like the proverbial "bringing a knife to a gunfight." If you are interested, and there are any in your area, the AAU has RAW meets, which are drug tested. You can check out their website at:

www.aausports.org

I am sure PLJay will be along shortly to give you some good advice on shirts, as he gets a lot more out of them than I ever will.

I think you lift in NASA, which I believe only allows single ply poly. Get a good tight poly shirt. I would go with the best you can get. In your case the extra high performance heavy duty from Inzer.

If you are lifting where denim is allowed, get a denim shirt and get used to it. Much more effective than poly, at least for me. But dangerous and horribly uncomfortable.

Get a shirt. Nobody goes raw.

My 2 cents.

B.

what is the rationale of this shirt?so you are saying you can't lift the weight without it?then what good is it?you have got to be kidding me.

Everyone wears shirts. If your in a raw class fine but in the end all of this sport the WPO , the Arnold Classic which is where i wanna be. There is amust for the shirt. Yu can buy them for however strong you think you are. When Arioch says i get more from them he means i have lockout power. Meaning this. We train raw bench once aweek. I am or my partners are by no means all shirt. But we take one day a week and lift as much as we can off boards to further our lockout ability. So if you get a shirt so tight that is takes X amount of weight to touch your chest, the shirt only helps the first 6 inches or less off the bottom. You better have some lockout strength and tri power to handle that shirt.

Speed demon shirts are liek knee wraps. Yes they help alot for some. I knwo some people who get very little from there shirts. Why no lockout power. I can bench 545 raw no shirt. With a shirt who knows nothing will touch but i reckon mid 600's. I get over 100 lbs ou tof my shirt easily. But i can lockout mid 600's. From 5 inches off my chest. SO if you think all you need is a shirt to lift weight go get a denim shirt and go win some money! Easier said then done.

first off i wouldn't even know where to get a "shirt".i wouldn't wear one if i did,i would rather get stronger to push the weight not but a "shirt".i bench no where near what you bench but i will admit that is alot without the shirt but i'm not impressed if you have to wear one to do 600.sorry,can't buy into it.and i have trained as a bodybuilder for years and i wanted to learn more about powerlifting as i thought it was.not shirts, boards and all that shit.does anyone on here lift without these things?????do you really feel good after making a lift in this shirt?and you say go win money??what does that mean?do you win money at these meets?i have heard of the wpo but can't say i know the details of it,but i beleive in old school sweat and determination .please respect my opinion.it pisses me off i come here and to answer my questions you direct me to other sites to read!isn't that why we are on these boards?

here's a little tip then ...GET THE FUCK OFF THE BOARD....assholes like you think the shirt is like a magic carpet.well guess what..you have to push that shit off your chest.i agree with this ...if you think you can do it DO IT!!!!get a shirt and lead the way, cause we all know talkin' shit on here don't mean shit.........what exactly do you bench and weigh,if you don't mind me asking......

most people on here do lift with bands and boards.. you know why? THEY WORK. and bands are fun. They let you work your weakest points with their max weight, and in the same movement work your stronger points just as hard. Also, a shirt is not as glorified as you think. I have friends who use it, and its not a miracle cure. Read up on stuff like westside before you s tart making biased opinions

The Mann,

was that directed twards me? If it was I don't know what i said to make you so upset. I'm now to this whole powerlifting thing. I see people useing them with alot of success and was wondering if I had any reason to get one.
Deciever, I'm not expecting a miracle out of the shirt. I know nothing about them thats why I was asking. I had heard some people say it will add 10 to 15 #'s on your bench and others have said more.
PLJ, if I do decide to get one I may ask you some more questions about them, several people told me you were the shirt guy on here.

Settle down speeddeamon, we direct you to sites because that is where the info is. It is much easier for you to read a three page article on something than for us to waste our time and write it all out for you. When you finish reading and then you don't understand someting ask a specific question and it will go a lot faster.

Most of the competitors on hear compete with a shirt. The federations we are in allow them and almost everyone wears them. If you don't like them than thats your buisness and go compete somewhere else. Most of these people can bench pretty fuckin heavy without them anyway and don't go thinking that just because we wear shirts that a lot of old school sweat ,blood and guts doesn't come with our training. Powerlifting is not all about boards and shirts but it just happens to be a proven method that a lot if guys on this board train like. If you don't like that method than ask for another way to train and we would be glad to give you our input or a place to find it. Otherwise go back to the training forum.

Grantsdu,

NO,NO,NO........towards speedemon....i'm cool with you and most on this board.this guy has nothing but negative shit to talk and puts down everything everyone posts.he don't like equipment,TUFF SHIT,he don't like the training..MORE TUFF SHIT............................

speed demon

Speed demon the boards are a training aid. It helps work a cetrtain portian of the lift. Its a modified rack lockout. I do raw bench every week. And i got more gym time , injuries, broken blood vessels, and have had blood come out of my eyes from squttin too heavy. RAW. I do not want your approval. If you wanna little increase on your bench then check your reps and frequency. Hit the tris more. Work your back harder. There are 200 ways to increase a bench press. And do i feel good when i bench with my shirt yes i do. Because if all shirts were outlawed today i would still be ranked what i am. Do you use knee wraps? Or wrist wraps? Or is that cheating too? I can squat 650 with belt only , dead 550 belt only. Everyone here is strong. The equipment is allowed. it slike race cars they way you drive doesnt chenge too much , but the cars get faster so you drive to accomadte the updated status. Yes i compete WPO, and held a check in my hand. I didnt bring that up to say what i have done i brought it up to make a point that i fits that easy go get a shirt and becoem pro. I have put more in to my training then you could imagine. I have busted my ass , and i train fuckin twice as hard as any bodybuilder i know and the ones i do knwo would never dispute that either. Its too obvious. So with out sounding rude because i knwo you rlooking for help, this is a powerliftin gboard and by chnace most here compete. If you wanna increase the old fashion way no boards just work, email me and i will give you a sample of my raw bench routine i currently use. If your interested. If your here to question our approach your at the wrong place. No one is intersted in hearing what you gotta say. the training board will be more your speed.

You are right, you shuldn't buy a shirt, you should buy a time machine! Go back to the 1970's and you will be satsfied. Wait, without progression there would be no internet (you wouldnt have a forum to cry in, no cell phones and everyone would be benchng raw.

Powerlifting is a sport. So is football, basketball and baseball.

How have these sports changed in the last 30 yrs?

Football-better pads, stronger, lighter, better shoes all help increse performance and protect injury

basketball- Much better shoes less afros!

Baseball- Better helmets, elbow gaurds, shin guards for hitters, tighter baseballs for more home runs

See, if powerlifting never got performance enhancing and injury preventive equipment then the sport would pateau (hate that word) and there would be no progress and a lot more injuries.

I can tell by your post that you have a tiny little bench press and a shirt woudnt help you much anyways. So crawl back to the smith machine with your pink spandex hot pants cause you don't belong with great lifters like most of the members of this board.

holy shit guys i hope i never piss you all off
to the original person who posted i cant even remember now: the shirt adds about 100 lbs on my bench
to speeddemon not really because it does the weight for me but it protects my shoulder
ask everyone here who has seen me bench i go ridiciously slow down because the pain in my elbow and shoulder gets so bad that if i go fast it would kill me
i prd the other day i did 315 for 5----330 for 3----275 for 7----225 for 14 or 16----all prs---why i worked through the pain and elbow getting better
but with a shirt i am benching a respectable 445(will be stronger now) because i dont feel the pain in shoulder and it cuts elbow pain in half.
in body building the guys on stage i'm sure look impressive to you but they are all jacked up--is that cheating whats the difference in a bench shirt for power lifting or aas to look better on stage---yes they train hard but the chemicals not just juice--insulin,lasix,hgh,igf-1 and the list goes on is advanced just like power lifting equipment has advanced
i'm not saying power lifters arent jacked as well but why isnt that an issue and equipment is--what about creatine, andros,is that cheating--they help performance as does the shirt
you got to get with the times bro or you will be left behind--your opinion-your entitled to it but i would not voice it that way on a power lifting board.
thats like going to the boss to bitch about the boss

You aren't impressed unless PJ can do 600 without a shirt??? LMAO. That is ridiculous. How much do you bench without a shirt?? Please quote numbers where you used a bench and a bar.......without a smith machine or any other type of machine you care to mention.

Fact is, most people here compete and do whatever they can, whilst working within the rules, to win. The rules say shirts are allowed......so they use them. When you are pressing as much weight as some of the posters you need a shirt in order to prevent injuries. If you want to think that the equipment will give you big lifts go and get yourself some and PROVE IT......somehow I think you wont and you'll just make some pathetic excuse about how you are better than that.

For the record, when I lift its just me and the bar....and a bit of chalk. But then most people here lift a heck of a lot more than me. Go figure!!

PowerlifterJay,
I would be interested in seeing your raw workout. If you find the time could you send a copy to [email protected] ?

Well I'm making progress......but not as much as I would have liked. Hopefully things'll settle down when I land a job so I don't have to worry bout fitting into a suit (over here its tough to find a suit with a respectible chest size) :) and moving around so I have to find new gyms every few months. Mebbe it was a mistake training for a job where you cant wear sweats all day . lol.

Hope the meet goeswell for you.....so long as you hit PR's who cares whether other people place higher.

so very true my friend,:D i'm glad your progress is going good to the point where you can't fit into suits:p :p :p you dog!!!!
keep hammering at bro...........

k1401.....;) you pickin' on me again........:D

listen i did not personaly insult anyone on here so don't do it to me.you say what do i bench and weigh??i weigh around 210 11% bodyfat not that it matters.i have benched 315 for 3 reps and that is the highest i have ever done.did i say i was the best?NO?
i try to look good as well as build some strength.so sorry if it came across wrong.thanks for the help........

speed demon its alright man. People who dont knwo the sport have a right to question things that there not familiar with. You should see the faces in my gym when i wear my shirt. Its cool man , just keep posting and realize some subjects are sensitive. Everyone has pissed off the board at least a time or too, its the guys that stick around that get respect and become regulars.

Respect has to be earned....

And secondly...if you yourself dont care enough about your training to read information....why the hell should anyone else here care about your training.

People send you to other sites to learn. If you read something there that you dont understand....AND YOU HAVE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS then chances are anyone here that can will help you.

Go get confused....then come back and ask questions. Thats one of the best ways to learn.

speed your apology accepted--just remember this is a power lifting board and i dont know why but a lot of people have a running fued with bodybuilders---i'm alright with them as long as they aint doing stupid shit in our power rack and respect how i train cause i do respect how they train
