Self defense classes?

I agree that Martial Arts is good to learn but imo you really need to have someone teach you the nasty street stuff along with it. I can remember watching some 3rd degree black belts spar in my class & thinking to myself "shit, these guys are dead if they ever get into a street fight". Most of them only weighed about 150-160 lbs. & hardly had any strength whatsoever. If you got in close on them & took away their kicking techniques they were lost. Didn't have a clue as to what to do. That's when I began to think that it was more about the dojo making money than teaching someone how to really defend themselves. Sorry for rambling....I guess it's a bit of a sore spot with me. ok, I'll shut up now...lol!

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is very solid close combat/ground fighting, if you can get a combo BJJ and Muay Thai kickboxing class you are covering everything.

Some of the martial art schools just concentrate on show type moves and fail to teach real world applications for those moves. The key is to look around and ask questions before you sign up with a school. Find what you are looking for.

You Tae Boe hoe. :D

:lmao:

sounds like you were doing tae kwon do. lots of kicking in that one =)

big4life i would 'potentially' disagree about self defence classes

the teacher may not instill the message that the techniques demonstrated are not to be used unless absolutely necessary. i realise it depends a lot on the instructor, but if someone is going to a self defence class, he;s gonna want to know how to kick ass, not belectured on when to use force. u get a lot of people going to these classes looking to be violent

they are good because they apply techniques to a more practicl setting though, and they are quicker to learn. but i;d still go with martial arts any day, unless the class looked good (one self defence class i know of is thai boxing, jeetkundo, and kungfu combined, which is pretty f-ing cool :D).

I agree about the people coming in just to look for ways to fight. My experience has been setting up classes for women to defend themselves against attackers. Any class that is taught should also teach you the damage that these moves can do and when to use them.

Gotta go the opposite direction on this one bro. I taught my girlfriend to attack the throat, nuts, and eyes. I told her to be ruthless as hell and do not stop until the motherfucker stops moving(or breathing, whichever). And, if there's more than one, I spent a lot of time teaching her simple knife fighting tactics. She carries a blade with her everywhere, and can instinctively whip it out and jab at least 2 potentially lethal spots before the average man can say "oh shit!"

In case I'm not around, my 5'3" 125lb girl is not one to be fucked with:)
