Scared little kids yesterday...

Because of Needsize's post on deadlifting I felt i had to go and do back and traps yesterday. I'd figure i would describe the gym i lift at. Imagine all scrawny kids with frosted hair and wife beaters. It gets worse All I hear is "yo bro how do i get bigger arms. Curls of course is the reply" So I warm up and do my pull-ups and then i go to cable rows and bang out 4 nice sets of 12rep range with the highest weight. Then I decide why should Needsize be the only person doing deads with heavy weight. So I do a few warmups and then 315 is on the bar up 10 times no prob. Then I turn around and everyone is staring and not lifting. I throw on some more weight and do 365 for four clean reps (ouch did they fuckin burn). My roomate was laughing cause nobody was in a ten foot radius of me, they were just looking at me in disbelief that someone could do that much weight..... Pretty sad that 365 is not tat much weight. But i'm feeling it this morning.....
I know this is a little off training posts, but i'm progressing in size nicely and my strength has increased dramatically sinc i started doing Deads....

:D Sounds like you lift at my gym bro. My training partner and I are the only guys that ever do deads. I've been at the same gym for over ten years and I can only remember seing maybe 2 others do them, but with pretty weenie weights.

Let me guys no one does squats too???? Huh isn't it funny all the guys who want to get big do nothing but bench and curls, yet the big men (or athletic) do almost all compound movements...

lol, yeah, with the exception of two guys I know of, the only people that usually do squats either use the smith machine, or have 135 on the bar and go down 6 inches, scream, then struggle back up. Its funny, when my gym is packed, everyone bitches that everything is taken. But, somehow I always seem to find the squat racks available. Everyone waits to use the same isolation things.

i know this feeling, and it is a good one. i train at a ballys and i see maybe 2-3 other guys that deadlift on a regular basis. i'm not as thick as either of them and only one of them hits maybe 200lbs tops for reps. on my heavy days i'll get up 280 for 10 right now and can't wait to hit 315. i so want to hear the sound of 3 plates tapping the ground for 10.

on a side note, my arms did not start growing until i began squatting and deadlifting heavy. i have also watched my traps travel further and further up my neck. i love it.

i know how that is. i can get 315 for 4-5 clean reps. it's not even that much. but since no one deadlifts, and my 160lb self starts lifting a bar with 3 plates on each side, people stare. kinda fun actually :D

Man I would love to work out at one of your guys' gyms. At my school there is one gym for everybody, including varsity athletes. So if you go there when the linemen are working out three plates is nothing. Then there's these two guys, one's quite tall and built and he's got bearded, bowlegged buddy who is about 5'5" who I call "Cousin of squat". The little guy gets up to about 500 and the big guys does like 365. They do like 8 sets. I asked them, "What are you training for?" and the bearded guy was like, "Just trying to get big." They don't look like students either so I have NO idea what their deal is.

yeah man i rarely see people doing them. ive just recently started them, and i cant wait til i start striking fear into the hearts of others. hahaha

my gym everyone deadlifts and squats.. so it can be hard to get a squat rack at my gym.. for me, a 335 deadlift at 132, seems good, but everyone else is pulling within 30 lbs of me and they are only a bit heavier

Suston, that's good stuff. My gym is probably somewhat like yours, you can see in those deadlift pics that I posted, all brand new equipment and yuppies as far as the eye can see. There are maybe 5 guys out of at least 1500 members that deadlift, and no one that goes as heavy as me. So when I get up to 5 plates a side for reps, everyone stops to see what that crazy fucker is doing.
No one at my gym squats below parallel except my training partner and I. So when I load up 4 plates a side and start going ass to the floor for reps, everyone looks at me like I have two asses. I even had one little punk, who could barely squat 2 plates for reps, come up and tell me that I was squatting too low. In turn, I asked him why my legs were twice the size of his then, funny thing, he had no response.

I'm kinda starting to like being the freak in a gym full of yuppies..

shit!

i use the most weight in my gym (hey some machines only go up to about 200!!!, so its not like im a powerlifter)

the looks i get make me laugh!! dudes say "damn i wanna have shoulders like that too, or how long did it take you to look like that?" then rather than workout those same clowns watch the basketballers downstairs half the time (my gyms upstairs and overlooks the b ball court)

My gym is full of guys dead lifting and squatting. I haven't been training for a mega amount of time but see that these are the way forward. I never used to squat, only do leg press until 4 weeks ago. Now i squat and dead my lifts on everything are going up enourmously. I hit 310lbs on deads for 3 reps yesterday and im feeling it today. I can't wait to get to the level of some of you guys.

needsize

I know what you mean by people who don't even go parallel. Sometimes I want to say something but who knows what kind of response you're gonna get?

The other day I'm doing SLDLs and some snotty little b-baller comes in and starts doing calf raises on the leg press with like 2 plates and 2 25s on there. He's basically cheating and using his knees. So he starts getting tired and starts using his knees even more but he's doing it really fast, to the point that the plates are rattling like crazy and causing a huge racket. He's doing like a 50-rep set. I look at the only other guy in our half of the gym like "WTF?!" but he only gives me a blank stare. Of course he's the same guy who is squatting 185 about 1/4 of the way and grunting with it so what could I expect?

Then the baller goes over to the squat rack and starts doing 135 1/4 of the way for reps and grunting his ass off.

Do you ever say anything to these morons?

JC

Needsize, good progress bro, Me and you are about the same height about 5'7-8 right? Yeah I starting to fill out my shoulders and back real nice since I started my old school training regiment. Pretty much i want to join the thousand pound club, but not for maxes but for weight i actually work out with. If I do squats with 365lbs then i hit it, but I don't like doing squats for less than 8 reps,I know i'm a little eccentric...

Getdownonit= good shit, keep on lifting...

I'd be interested in seeing your training regiment...post it if you got time and don't mind....

Generally I don't bother as when I get the rude responses I want to hurt someone, so it's just not worth the effort. The only time I will say anything is if they're pretty young, they are a little more receptive about advice from "that big guy".

beastboy, are you talking about my training, if so, here's the gist:
day 1 chest/calves/abs
day 2 shoulders/back
day 3 resy
day 4 rest
day 5 bi's/tri's/forarms
day 6 quads/hams/abs
day 7 rest
Most of my workouts for any bodypart start with a heavy compound movement for 3-5 sets of 5 reps, followed by 2 other exercises for 2 sets each, 8-10 reps.
Here's an example for chest
flat bench 5x5
incline dumbell press 2 sets 8-10 reps
incline dumbell flyes 2 sets 8-10 reps

I first thought this was going to be a thread about you scaring neighborhood children, but this is just as funny...

:lmao:

Congrats on your fine deadlifting ability!

Thank you Lady MB

Hey Beastboy here's my regiment:

Mon: back/ traps
Tue: chest/ delts
Wen: rest
Thu: arms
Fri: legs

I usually never train my abs, I really hate crunches but I'm gonna start. Most of my sets are in pyramid form, I always do two warmup sets in the beginning after those i no longer need to warmup. reps are abou 12, then 8-10, then 6-8, then 8-12
If you want more info I will post more, I do a pause at the bottom of each rep and the top, this eliminates all momentum and really helps me grow.

fuck YES!
Deads kick ass!!
I pulled 405 off the floor for 3 reps
after I take off my phones guy r comin up 2 me
"I read about how u r sopposef to do those 2 get big"
"yeah, i'm gonna start doin those again"

AGIN! $5k says u never did em to start!
peace to my bros who dead n squat hard!

good stuff!

I recently started incorporating heavy deads into my training and i can already see and feel a difference(in strength, muscle size)....i feel bad for all those punks that dont do squats (or worse dont work legs at all!!!!!!!!!) and deads but are trying to gain massive size with concentration curls and some light bench....LIFT BIG,EAT BIG,REST BIG.....GET BIIIIIIGGGGG!

Had a good day...

Just wanted to give a head up I got 365 for a clean 8 reps this week. I just felt really good after 225 ( I did it for 15 reps) so I said what the hell, 365lbs for 8 then I did it for 5 reps the next set. Funny thing is the look I got from one kid, "the WTF is wrong with you look" The I remembered that i wasn't wearing a wifebeater, didn't try to flex in the mirror, have all my buddies lifting the weight in an attempt to help me by making me look 'tough.' I was wearing a a thermal longsleev shirt, some old windpants and boots and a fleece, with glasses on. Guess it wasn't what they were use to. Then again it could have been the intensity:D

I tried Deads last week at the gym.. with only 135.. my lower back was killing me the next day.. also someone there said my form was off.. that my back was "rounded" and i needed to stick my ass out more..

I feel like I am not doing the form quite right either.. i know how to start.. but do you straighten your legs first and then your back.. or back straight first then legs... or both at the same time..

I have a feeling i'll try it again this week and be writing you guys to tell you how i thew my back out!

Get your ass down as low as possible before you start, keep your hips tight and back straight, shoulders back. Suck in your gut and pull.
