saving muscle while dieting...

What would be the best approach for saving muscle while burning fat, if your not weight training?

In other words say hypothetictly, you have obtained great muscle gains all your life, but cant lift weights anymore, but have fat that needs to go around the mid section, and can only do cardio and diet......what would be the best regimen for keeping the muscle you have but loosing the spare tire? what good supplements save muscle during heavy cardio?
 
Just something:
If you gain that muscle lifting weights one thing that happens when you stop is that you will start to lose it. Quicker or not according to what you eat, but even with the best diet if you stop training (or the person in the hipotetic situation) part of the muscle will go away.

You're body is only going to keep what it thinks it needs. It's a pretty efficient machine, and will drop anything excess.

You've got to find a way to trick it into thinking it needs to keep the muscle mass, even though it's not using it.

Not really sure how to do that, except maybe toss some creatine and other things (depending on how far you're willing to take it) that'll help you hold muscle.

I've got very few ideas if you can't lift, sorry man.
