Running shoes

Hi, I've always gotten shin splints when I start a running routine. I was wondering if anyone uses a particular shoe model to reduce shin splints, or if anyone has any advice on this.

Yeah I agree 100% with that...I switched from Nike to New Balance a year or two ago and I must say I am very pleased with how comfortable they are.

I'm an Asics Gel fan, myself. I am shin splint prone as well, but I haven't had problems with the Gel.

Asics have been great for me. Make sure you get the type that suits whether your foot rolls in, out or is neutral.

FYI - New Balance started out as an orthopedic shoe company...good roots if you ask me.

Mizuno is the best shoe I've ever owned, it is kinda hard to find but well worth it... you might also try going to a store specifically for running, they'll check your stride measure your foot and show several different shoes that would best fit you... and it's free

Keep your eye on your form. Get shoes that are more rounded at the heal and toe, and are comfortable. Concentrate on hitting the ground with your feet as softly as you can and you will not get shin splints.

I agree on New Balance. Found them a few years ago and will never ever buy any other brand.

Check out RoadRunnerSports.com's "Shoe Dog." I use it all the time to bring up a list of sneaks that fit my specs. (I have wide feet and like extra cushion).

Thanks a lot for all the replies, I'll definitely put your advise to good use. I'm liking what I've read about the NB shoes and I'm thinking of trying the New Balance 854s or the New Balance 805s. I'll probably stop by a Foot Locker or Sports Authority to see how they feel before I buy them online.

My boyfriend has a pair of the 805s's--which he really liked. My dad has the same pair too...he only buys New Balance because he has wide feet and no arch.

Cool, thanks for the info, I've got the same low-arch deal going for me too, I'm looking mostly at shoes for moderate pronators, NB seems to have a lot of street cred in this area.

If your serious about running, take a look at some Brooks. I run in Brooks' "The Beast" and love them.

shin splints-- prob not your shoes. I always get them running on pavement (esp hills). Stick to track/ trails...also a shot of cortazone helps.
