Has anyone tried one of these? They are supposed to be very effective. I am studying Portuguese right now and it seems quite easy. I just wonder if I will retain any of the language once I've completed the course.

That probably depends on how regularly I use the language.

The more you use it, the easier it is to retain.

Also, depending on your cellphone, you can actually download course to the memory chip (or purchase chips themselves) for about $20 and listen to it while you have free time during the day.

Good idea, I'll try that if I don' t make progress with my analog memory chips (3x5 cards).

I have the Barron's course for Italian. It's the one the U.S. government uses to train their Diplomatic Personnel. I've started to study it regularly, but I don't think my Italian will get to the level I want it to be unless I force myself to speak it with my mother. She comes from Rome and her Italian is impeccable.

Thanks malandrina, it's good to have someone that you know who you can speak the language with on a regular basis. Your mom is probably pumped that you're studying the native tongue!
