Just wondering who actually uses these recovery methods and do you feel they make a difference? I heard about them in the seminar and in some books. I have access to sauna and steam room, but have only used them like 2-3 times after my workout, since its a little far to go back for them later... Also I heard massages work good too, and that some athlete's get messages and these recovery techniques all the time!! I guess they really help you heal faster and recover....

When ever i realy feel taxed after a back / squat day i will use contrast showers after the workout and hit the hot tub for the next few days. THese at least help me loosen up and the hot/cold help me control inflamation of my tendons. I have a freind that gets a massage weekly and swears by them but he also gets half price. I f i had the money would get a massage Weekly and i think that activ erecovery is the best type.

Hey Grimmer....Contrast showers help with inflamation???? I didn't know that..... So, like you said after a heavy workout, these hot/cold showers would be the best to help with recovery.....I usually take a cool shower after a heavy w/o to "cool" off my muscles and all...I usually did hot/cold during the day or on non-workout days... But i guess they are best done immediately following a W/O?

Has anone ever tried an ice bath? I hard about once and its supposed to be the king of all recovery but the hardest and most brutal recovery method.

I guess if you filled your tub with cold water and got one or two of those 10 pound ice bags and dumped them in then it would work.

You would have to be a little crazy to try it.

I definatley have not tried that!!! That does sound brutal! Sounds like the same thing as putting ice on a sore muscle or something....

btw, ICE is supposed to reduce inflamation, but does it stop the muscle from reparing or growing, since its getting soo cold?

And this should only be done just after working out, not the next day or so when its still sore? You should use heat for these days ... Do i have this right?

Check this out from Planet Muscle Volume 4, November 2001 pg 141 abot ice baths.

Although it is brutal beyond human belief, one of the absolute best methods of total muscle and body restoration is an ice bath following your training. You can think of it as a giant form of liquid cortisone. Ice is the best, supreme anti-inflamitory agent, better than any non steroidal anti-inflanmatory drug.
