Recovered from eating disorder & want to lose weight the right way

Hi guys,
I also posted this in the woman's forum, I hope you don't mind the cross-posting.

When I was in my teens I struggled with an eating disorder, which I did overcome. Now I'm 20 years old and in the last year or so I've gained quite a bit of weight. I attribute this partially to the birth control pill. Anyway, I'd like to lose some of this extra body fat that I've gained over the last year, and I'd like to do it the RIGHT way. The thing is, I don't know where to start. I still have a few complexes from before - I feel like if I'm eating an adequate amount of food and don't feel deprived/hungry, then I'm "failing" and not losing fat. I know this isn't true at all, but I guess it's something that's still in my head from before. I was hoping some of you could give me some tips and help me start on the right track. I'm really confused about where to start, what macronutrient ratios to use, whether I should adopt a low-carb way of eating, etc. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I'm new here so please be gentle! :)

Thanks!

do you workout?

stick with a high fiber a.m. low carb p.m diet.... And don't restrict calories in the beginning. get used to eating "clean" then take a look at the kcals. I would say if you start doing cardio at 60-70% for 30-45 mins 3-5 days a week with weight training 3x per week you should be able to take your bodyweight and multiply it by 12 to figure out how many calories you should be comsuming to lose weight

I think you should talk to a doctor or someone certified to answer these questions. as the advice you are most likely to get on here wont be the best for someone with an eating disorder past present or future.

but i'll bump it for you just incase there are people who know.

I think many people here do not understand the effects and seriousness of eating disorders and will be prone to giving you advice that can be counter-productive to your health.

My suggestion is to call a doctor and get help. I think your doctor knows more about your problems then we do. And I also think that there is more to this then just food. Eating disorders are often a result of under-lying emotional issues that have not been resolved, and cannot be resolved through food and becoming thinner.

Lotsa Love

The first 43 lbs i lost i lost w/o feeling deprived or hungry. I ate 2900 kcal a day, did 600kcal cardio 5x a week and lost alot of weight that way. If i felt deprived I ate a wendys hamburger or some brownies (this happened about 4-5x a week). However i think those days are gone and i have to actually start feeling like im on a diet to keep losing weight.

Are you on depo-provera?

There are several macronutrient combos. Low fat, low carb, 40/40/30 setups, etc. I dont like low carbs so i prefer a 20/30/50 P/F/C set-up. Thats what i used on my first 43 lbs.

What about pharmacology or supplements, are you looking into them? Calcium via eating dairy 3x a day has been shown to help fat loss for example. There are tons of supplements to look at. Some work some don't, its hard to tell.

Hi guys, I understand your concerns given the fact that I used to have an eating disorder. However, I overcame my eating disorder 4 years ago. Now, I'd like to be a healthy, happy person. My current wish to lose weight is not covering up an underlying emotional issue - i promise!

My eating habits right now are not the greatest (too much processed foods) and I'd like to start eating healthier and cleaner and adopt a healthier lifestyle, regardless of weight, although fat loss would be an added bonus because I am slightly overweight right now.

Thanks guys for your concerns and input!

Well, you could try the The Dietary Guidelines For Americans or Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating. To me they seem the most sensible and have the most research to back them up. They are also simple to follow for many people. A diet would simple mean to lower your calories to a safe level and be sure to follow their recommendations to ensure your getting the right amount of nutrients.

Good luck

5 small meals a day. 50/20/30 p/c/f works for me.. but im gonna guess our body chemistry is a little diff..

honestly in your situation i'd just figure out my bmr, and eat a couple hundred cals below maintence and add 30min low-med intensity cardio 5 days a week. do that for a month and see where it gets you. should take it off nice and slow and not make you feel like your life revolves around your diet
