...ok - each color represents x amount of tension......but that value can't be consistent from person to person due to stroke distances correct???

Correct. Each band has a maximum amount of tension, but the variables are many. For example, on speed squats we restrain the bands at the bottom with 4 db's. The height of the dumbbells, the height of the bar, the angle from the intersection of the db's and the bar, the height of the person, the height of the bar, the band postition on the bar, how far the person sits back, the angle at which the person ascends and descends, etc....will all play into the amount of tension in the band.

Maximum amount???

Tension will continue to increase as the band is stretched until it breaks......

So in terms of giving a "number" they are not really reliable....but they do "overload" thru out the movement.

Correct. I can not determine the amount I speed squat with bands, nor can I predict the amount of my 1 rep max by factoring the tension of the band. I could get really technical and come pretty close, but I'd have to miss a week of workouts trying to calculate it. Bound correctly, they will provide tension throughout the movement a.k.a. accomodating resistance. What you CAN measure is the fact that 40% of your max is used with the bands, in terms of actual weight. As you are able to more weight on the bar with same bands under the same conditions, you can infer progress. Also, the speed at which you can pull a given weight with a given band should increase with progress.

You are far too ass to have a smart like that......
