Your body will use protein as the last option. First it will use available energy (carbs in the digestive tract), next it will use stored fat, and third will be available protein. If trying to lose fat, your body will not get to the protein very quickly as there is stored fat to burn and the protein will protect muscle from breakdown as Maxellys stated. Even not eating up to 1/2 hour afterward will keep the body in a stored fat burning mode. Eating solid foods within 11/2 hours of workout will mean you have blood rushing to your digestive area helping in the digestion process instead of to the large muscle groups that is needed during cardio and workouts. The protein shake is perfect for precardio.
