I think it was like that, because so few people were bodybuilders back then. Now just about everyone works out, and lots of people enter shows, even if only local. Combine that with all the prize money, it's gotten pretty cut throat.
Back then you'd have Arnold talk some smack on you to your face, but it was all in good fun. They look like they were all business come contest day, but still best of friends. Even when Arnold was announced the winner (in 75), he still gave Serge a hug, shook Lou's hand on stage, etc.
Today everyones talking smack on each other behind their backs, and they take it seriously. That one fool Kamali wants to make it like pro wrestling. He just doesn't realizing the WWE is acting. He's insulting people, and it's just not good for the sport. Plus you see guys keeping to themselves, not really being too friendly.
Back then they all trained together in that one tiny gym. They didn't have some 150lb kid in a wife beater doing curls in the squat rack like at todays Golds, or housewifes looking to 'tone' up. It was just them, the iron, and sweat. All a bunch of hard core guys getting the job done, then going out and enjoy lifes adventures as friends. Sounds like great times to me...
ps. Anyone pick up on how during the Annv. special, they all seemed to look back on those days in fondness, and would go back if they could. Even Arnold seemed that way. I think he would go back and do it all over again if he could, even if it meant starting at the bottom again.
