PS4 may not include Cell processor (Red in 3...2...1...)

December 28, 2009 - Sony's next gaming console may not include the much-heralded Cell architecture.

A report from Japanese outlet Impress Watch states Sony is considering several options for the design of the 'PlayStation 4,' including scrapping the Cell design entirely and moving towards a traditional PC multi-core processor.

Tech writer Hiroshige Goto says Sony is also looking at a new, modified version of the Cell processor, and Intel's Larrabee chipset as possible candidates. He also says that it seems unlikely we'll see a release of the 'PS4' until 2012 at the earliest, as it usually takes two years for a console to go from concept into full production.

While the PlayStation 3's Cell processor has its advantages over the competition, many third-party developers still seem to be having difficulty programming for it, as recently seen with SEGA's Bayonetta port. Whatever they choose to do, though, it's refreshing to see Sony focusing on being more developer-friendly for the future.

'PlayStation 4' May Not Include Cell Processor - PS3 story - at IGN

It's gonna be very interesting seeing MS and Sony try to outdo each other next gen. Then there's Nintendo.... maybe they'll surprise them both lol.

It's ironic to see the future of hardware so dependent on software and programmers. The hardware guys were typically the air-tight designers and the software guys were the ones who used dental floss and chewing gum. Now it's going to come down to compilers and software design techniques that can support distributed computing before we can take advantage of these fancy new architectures.

Yeah multi-threading is only now starting to take off.

told ya so!!

Of course they're going to be moving to more standard architecture......games these days are already too damn expensive to make without the 6 month's of dissecting inane unfriendly architecture that is going to fuck with you at every turn. I understand on one hand the principle behind designing unique hardware as to dissuade modders/pirates........but than have Dev. kits that come pretty damn close to allowing developers to max out the system. Obviously the big boys like ubi will always get more because they have the resources. It's just a retarded development strategy and it's about time sony woke up to that. The days of them strongarming 3rd party developers to be exclusive to them are long gone....and that's they only reason why I'm glad microsoft got into the business. Without them, sony would have rubbed out nintendo completely by now and we'd be stuck with a monopoly run by a shitty fucking company that would be wedging mediocrity up our asses for the next 10 years.

The ironic thing is, if you asked any third party developer which company they'd least like to work with, it'd be Nintendo almost every time. It's funny, they have more competition now than they've ever had, and for the last 10 years, aside from Mario, Zelda, and Metroid, have been wedging an increasing amount of mediocrity up our asses. The worst part is, at least in the Wii's case, they've been making a killing off of this practice. On the other hand, Sony had MGS 1-3, Gran Turismo 1-4, GTA 3/Vice City/SA, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, and the latter half of the Final Fantasies while they were dominating. Not exactly mediocrity, but yeah I'll agree competition does make things even better overall.

I don't know about the last one that just came out, but all the MGS games since MGS 2 on the original playstation ARE CRAP!!
I was all set to buy a ps2 when I heard that MGS 3 was coming out for it. And I'm sure glad I played it before I did something retarded like buy a sony product. MGS2 on the orginal station is still one of the most glorious video game experiences of all time. Everything since has had all these nice fancy graphics with complete horseshit gameplay and story line. At least IMO, and I know I'm not alone in that opinion. I know alot of guys that thought as highly of the MGS series as I did until they got to about the 2nd or 3rd iteration after mgs2 when they finally gave up and realized that kojima had been rolling on old good will from that origional game.

shadow of the collusus is the only game in that list that I don't consider average at best.
