Protein depletes calcium from bones?

I once read something about how the body breaks down protein and now I can't find it, I hope someone on here might have some thoughts on this.

I read that your bones are being depleted of calcium used to break down either meats or protein in general. Its been a few years since I have drank a soda, but I also read by drinking large amounts of soda it will make your bone marrow spongy.

The reason I am asking is I have been on a very high protein diet for a couple of years now (as I'm sure most of us are), and I recently broke my hand, and a few months before that I separated my hip.

This is very odd to happen to me since I had been in boxing for years and I wrestled in high school and have never broken a bone. I broke my metacarpal while sparring with a friend of mine and I barely hit him.

Since then I have been taking calcium pills, and now I read somewhere that most of the calcuim I've been taking isn't doing any good without an uptake of vit.K.

I would appreciate any knowlegable answers.

Will Brink wrote an article on protein myths a while back. The short of the article is that it's BS. Considering olympic weightlifters and bodybuilders have the highest bone densities of any athletes really places some doubts in my mind about the theory.

Great Info. here, thanks bud!

I heard that theory of osteoporosis awhile back, thanks for shedding some light on the subject.

A milk protein isolate is a great source of protein and calcium. It's 90% protein and 6% minerals, which includes massive amounts of calcium and magnesium.

What about vit.K, my doc said calcium alone won't help without an up take of vit K. You will just pass most of it.

I just turned 30, maybe I'm just getting old.

A lot of things are rquired to maintain bone density beyond calcium. Adequate intake of all nutrients, particularly minerals, is vital as well as some weight training to create the biochemical "spark" required to grow new bone. That's why I always recommens a good multi dose multi in someones's diet for insurance. According to studies performed by the USDA about 60%-70% of Americans don't consume the RDA of magnesium and zinc.
