Pretty sure I have a hernia :(

Ive had this weird pressure-like spot on my stomach about an inch left of my belly button, and Ive ignored it because it simply felt like a strained muscle. But today when I was at work, we were cleaning up at the end of the day and I sneezed and I got a sharp stabbing pain in the same spot on my stomach, it hurt so bad I hit my knees and couldnt stand up for a good minute or so. Its about an hour later and my stomach still has some soreness. Should I go straight to a doc or should I wait a little while and see if the pain goes away?

i can push my hernia back in. It hurts to sneeze!

I you can get it fixed,do it!

you can try to push it back in if the muscles not to bad torn in your abodomen.

and then let the muscle heal don't do anything stupid at all.

or just go to a doc.

many times I thought I had a hernia only for the Doc to say "no its just a micro tear of muscle fibers ( much like any other muscle) or just a strain."

As far as the belly button area, MOST MALES are born with a congenital weakness there. It feel very much like an indentation or possible void. Its just a weak link but NOT a hernia in most cases. It can develop into one based on poor lifting and daily activity.

Just make sure to treat you abs with care and your will be fine.

yea im taking the week off of lifting and taking it easy at work, hopefully its just a bad strain or minor tear. we'll see.

go to the doc. . .i had a small one over top of my belly button. . .got it fixed a few years ago. . .no big deal. . .i was back in the gym on light duty in a few days and back to full force in 3 or 4 weeks. . .

problem is i dont have medical insurance so i cant afford any type of surgery if it really is a hernia.

if you're under 30, good blue cross insurance costs less than $100 per month. . .if you're spending money on "supplements" that you ought to be spending on other things first (e.g., health insurance), shame on you. . .

lol, im 21, i dont know anything :D

Well I broke down and went to the doc on tuesday. Turns out it is not a hernia, thank god. It's most likely just a tear from lifting. It feels quite a bit better now, went to the gym today and did light work for chest and tri and had no pain. Ill be back at it in no time :D

we are so similar and its good you got the clear from a Doctor
now practice "vacumes" and isometric flexion of abs to make them decrease in circumference, carry this over when lifting and control the diameter of your trunk when lifting and deliberately keep it tight so you do not incur injury

my training partner is 25 y/o. . .he has blue cross insurance, prescription card, annual $500 deductible and it costs like $90 a month. . .get yourself insured!

I went through this exact scenario back in early July.
Took a week off the gym, the abdominal pain didn't get much better.

Went to the GP and he stated it wasn't a large hernia he could feel bulging, but
when he pressed on my abdomen while I contracted my abs, he felt a soft spot
or a depression in the muscle wall on both sides below my belly button. Not a
true umbilical hernia though.

Had me immediately go get a lab work and an Abdominal CT scan with contrast both drink and IV. This can also be a sign of an intestinal blockage as well as other serious problems. That came back normal. He referred me to a GI for a Colonoscopy as well as a Surgeon consult to verify his findings of a minimal abdominal hernia or weak muscle wall.

I don't do squats since it happened, but am able to do most other lifts and it only bothers me a bit now. I will get the colonoscopy due to my age just to get it out of the way. I am in a wait and see mode as I ramp the Lbs back up on my lifts before I see the Surgeon.

By the way, generally speaking, true Hernias will not heal on their own. They will always have the tendency to get worse until repaired surgically. And even then they can reoccur.

Well now I'm more worried then before. The doc had told me he didnt feel any hernia but I did have pain so he said it was just a tear. But its been so long since the initial pain, and I get pain at the weirdest times. I just had another sharp stabbing pain about an inch down and to the left of my bellybutton just from laughing hard. I dont really have the money to go to another doc for a second opinion. And I cant afford to buy insurance right now. I guess im just sorta fucked, if its a hernia ill be in the sometime soon i guess.

no ab work after the injury. but i used to do slantboard situps once a week. and my job is very strenuous. hardwood flooring, its basically cardio all day.

you know a few months back I though I had one to..I was doing squats and when I got to my max 500 I went down for the 3rd time and really really had to give ti all I had to get it back up.I prob should have had my spotter help because I could tell I was feeling week that day but I was like fuck it ill dig deep and get this fucker up.as I was pushing I felt something that felt almost like something tore.I racked the weight with help from my spotter got out from under it and felt nothing...but then the next day my lower abs were very sore...for weeks I lifted light on my squats and dl but I kept feeling the taring feeling...I took a week of and it just went away....fuck it.lol

your not going to like my answer:

take one month off of lifting do your work and while you work practice "Vacumes"

and hold it throughout the day.

As far as training just run outside every other day for 2-3 miles this will do alot for you and keep you from going crazy

do it AFTER work

I've had 2 repaired (Umbiblical and right side Inguinal). I had a cat scan on my heart 2 years ago and they found 2 more (hiatal, and diaphramic) that I had no idea I had.
Obviously I'm suseptable to herniations. Doesn't stop me from powerlifting though - I'm a slow learner - LOL.

youre right i dont like it. but if it works ill have to do it. is lightweight workouts ok? also, wtf are vacumes?

vacuumes are where you decrease the circumference of your abdomen

its like creating you own weight belt with the power of your own breathing.
In time the abs will do it naturally an hold there thus making you alot more aesthetics and primarily less prone to injury in my opinion.

As far as the time off the running will be enough, you need to let you body work it self out of this and remove any variables such as lifting session which may make things worst.

Went to work today and while doing one of the easiest portions of my job, which requires basically no effort, just being on my hands and knees laying wood on the floor, my stomach started to hurt really bad. I left work and am sitting at home now trying to find on the net what I need to do. On the lower left side of my abs, I can feel a soft spot thats about the size of a quarter, and no matter how hard I flex my abs it doesn't tighten. I have read a bunch about torn muscles and hernias, and the symptoms don't exactly fit either. Can anyone confirm that this is just a torn ab or should I go back to the doc for another checkup that I cannot afford?

just throwing this out there

but maybe its organ related , I say this just to OPEN you options in case you go to a doc again.

But the pain I get is on my ab muscle and not so internal. I requested to take my week of vacation asap from my boss, hopefully he can come through.

Lee, your pain symptoms and location are pretty much exactly what I went through and am still dealing with at a low level. The pain was/is on either side of my mid abdomen, maybe 2" below my ribcage. I can feel a sore soft spot and sometimes a moderate bump in the muscle wall. But not quite a bulge like a hernia. Strange thing for me was that sitting up etc didn't make it hurt more. Just sitting or bending my abdomen made it hurt. It felt like a pressure, sharp cramp type of pain..
And if I lay totally flat for 20 min, the pain would go away completely.

I took 2 weeks off lifting and cardio totally and the bad pain went away.
I started cardio slowly and then added some light lifts and no squats or lifts that would put strain on my core. I tried some light squats last week and the pain came back mildly, so this may be something I deal with for a while.

I think if you can take off physical activity for a week completely you will know if it is a muscle weakness, beginning of an abdominal hernia or something else.

I had CAT scans just to be safe. Sorry you can't get that done as this pain could be caused by other things, and pain is a strange thing sometimes in the way it feels vs where and what it is.

I scheduled another appointment with a doctor tomorrow to get it rechecked since it has gotten quite a bit worse since last Tuesday. Ill let you guys know what it is when I find out. I'm just praying its not as serious as I think it is.

When you go there; if you ar not satisified with the assesment DEMAND they solve it.

tell them you dont have a ton of $$ and DEMAND some type of real follow up or some type of TEST to really see whats wrong.

Just got back from the doc. She said it was just a tear after all, but it has become inflamed due to me not taking care of it properly. I need to ice it and take 600mg of Ibuprofein (sp?) 4 times a day for 10 days.

The thing that pisses me off about all this is that the first doctor I saw never told me to take any anti-inflammitories.

from a medical website. . .

PRESCRIBED FOR: Ibuprofen is used for the treatment of mild to moderate pain, inflammation and fever.

DOSING: For minor aches, mild to moderate pain, menstrual cramps and fever the usual adult dose is 200 or 400 mg every 4 to 6 hours. Arthritis is treated with 300 to 800 mg 3 or 4 times daily. When under the care of a physician, the maximum dose of ibuprofen is 3.2 g daily. Otherwise, the maximum dose is 1.2 g daily. Individuals should not use ibuprofen for more than 10 days for the treatment of pain or more than 3 days for the treatment of a fever unless directed by a physician.

you're 1,200mg below that dose so i guess it must be ok. . .

a tear or a hernia?

a tear can be just the muscle where a Hernia would be a piercing of the wall that allows for the intestines to protrude.

Be VERY careful with Anti Inflammatories , always use a low dose, and for the least amount fo time possible

when i used them they were best before bed, and I tried to not use them in the day

yea im not a fan of taking any kind of pain pill omega, but its only for 10 days at the most. and if its helps, ill be glad to take it for now. ill let you guys know how it does for the next week. im hoping taking next week off of work will make it heal quicker.

Im glad to say ive been back to the gym a few times this week and have no pain on my abs. But being out of the gym for a couple of weeks always sucks because the DOMs is always worse.

Great news..

I still get twinges of pain every so often if I go too heavy on something
or strain my core to lift using my abs too much..
