Pew Forum Religious Knowledge Survey: Atheists and Agnostics Score Highest

I got every question correct. :) I thank my Comparative Religion high school class and college Jewish Culture class for giving me the knowledge of Judaism.

Washington, D.C. -- Atheists and agnostics, Jews and Mormons are among the highest-scoring groups on a new survey of religious knowledge. They outperformed evangelical Protestants, mainline Protestants and Catholics on questions about the core teachings, history and leading figures of major world religions.

These are among the key findings of the "U.S. Religious Knowledge Survey," a nationwide poll conducted by the Pew Research Center's Forum on Religion & Public Life from May 19 through June 6, 2010, among 3,412 adults.

On average, Americans correctly answer 16 of the 32 religious knowledge questions on the survey. Atheists and agnostics average 20.9 correct answers. Jews and Mormons do about as well, averaging 20.5 and 20.3 correct answers, respectively. Protestants as a whole average 16 correct answers; Catholics as a whole, 14.7. Atheists and agnostics, Jews and Mormons perform better than other groups on the survey even after controlling for different levels of education.

On questions about Christianity (including the Bible), Mormons and white evangelical Protestants show the highest levels of knowledge. Jews, atheists and agnostics stand out for their knowledge of world religions, including Buddhism, Hinduism and Judaism. Jews, atheists and agnostics also do particularly well on questions about the role of religion in public life, including what the U.S. Constitution says about religion.

While previous surveys by the Pew Research Center have shown that America is among the most religious of the world's developed nations, this survey shows that large numbers of Americans are not well informed about the tenets, practices, history and leading figures of major faith traditions -- including their own. Many people also think that the constitutional restrictions on religion in public schools are stricter than they really are.

Additional findings include:

•More than four-in-ten Catholics (45%) do not know that their church teaches that the bread and wine used in Communion do not merely symbolize, but actually become, the body and blood of Christ

•About half of Protestants (53%) cannot correctly identify Martin Luther as the person whose writings and actions inspired the Protestant Reformation, which made their religion a separate branch of Christianity.

•Roughly four-in-ten Jews (43%) do not recognize that Maimonides, one of the most venerated rabbis in history, was Jewish

•Fewer than half of Americans (47%) know that the Dalai Lama is Buddhist; fewer than four-in-ten (38%) correctly identify Vishnu and Shiva with Hinduism; and only about a quarter of all Americans (27%) know that most people in Indonesia are Muslims

•There is widespread confusion over the line between teaching and preaching in public schools. Nine-in-ten Americans (89%) know that U.S. Supreme Court rulings do not allow teachers to lead public school classes in prayer. However two-thirds of people surveyed incorrectly say that Supreme Court rulings prevent public school teachers from reading from the Bible as an example of literature, and only 36% know that comparative religion classes may be taught in public schools.

•Most Americans are able to correctly answer at least half of the survey's questions about the Bible. Roughly seven-in-ten (71%) know that, according to the Bible, Jesus was born in Bethlehem. More than six-in-ten (63%) can correctly name Genesis as the first book of the Bible.

Data from the survey indicate that educational attainment -- how much schooling an individual has completed -- is the single best predictor of religious knowledge. On average, college graduates answered nearly eight more questions correctly than those with a high school education or less. Religious knowledge is also higher among those who have taken a religion course in college. Other factors linked with religious knowledge include reading Scripture at least once a week and talking about religion with friends and family.

For those curious about their own religious knowledge, the online presentation of the "U.S. Religious Knowledge Survey" includes an interactive quiz that allows Web visitors to answer a selection of questions taken from the survey and compare their results to the nation as a whole and with various religious and demographic groups.

In conjunction with the release of the survey, WGBH in Boston will debut "God in America," a six-hour series that interweaves documentary footage, historical dramatization and interviews to explore the historical role of religion in the U.S., including its impact on society, politics and culture. It will air over three consecutive nights on PBS beginning Oct. 11.

I saw that yesterday. World News Tonight did a piece on it and then polled some people on the streets.. the Christians polled didnt know the first four books of the New Testament. They were asking people coming out of a chuch! Most Catholics dont read the bible, and most Protestant Churches dont preach or teach the bible anymore. Most pastors are like Joel Osteen - pretty in their suits teaching self help from the pulpits. I watched Joel Osteen one Sunday morning and he didn't refer to his bible once. He quoted Abraham Lincoln but never once used a chapter verse from the bible.

I knew all the books of the bible, in order and where to find them, before the second grade. Most Christian Jr. High and high school students dont know the books in the bible and how to find a chapter and a verse

I scored a 14/15. I had no idea and totally had to guess the last one.

Plus I believe the church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints is not the same as Mormon so I think the test wasnt 100% correct either :lmao:

I'm not surprised by this at all. Most athiests I know tend to ask questions and look for answers. That is the exact opposite of "Christianity" today. Even though we have to "seek" God, most think if they go to church and say a prayer they are in.

Most "Christians" are going to die and burn in hell. Literally or figuratively, whatever, they wont be the bride of Christ. There is no way someone is going to convince me they've found The Truth if they dont know and have not read the first four books of the New Testament.

Mathew, Mark, Luke and John all differ on the life of Jesus...a major myth, the virgin birth, only appears in one of the gospels.

On a side note, as a "bride of Christ" will you finally let him give you anal or give you a facial on the wedding night? :)

incorrect. LDS = Mormon. Ask jnevin! LOL! no really though, ask dabuffguy (wait, who?)

Serios though. There are a few divisions within The LDS Church (mormon church), but The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints definitely = mormons.

I must have been thinking of Community of Christ, (RLDS) who don't like being called Mormon, or can't be called Mormon...I don't know. I made that mistake once.

lol @ u being better than anyone

Right, I forgot...you've got that covered...

What's it like to sit in judgement? :)

I went to parochial school for many years (Catholic then Lutheran) and had to memorize the names of the bible. I took even more classes when I was going to get married in the Catholic church. (Kinda glad that whole mess didn’t pan out). What was my point…Oh yea, you would think with all the classes they make you take they would know the little things about their religion, core teachings for example.

oh how the words come back to haunt.

I'm not haunted by my words. I know what I typed. I used to be that person.

If you don't have it, then you don't have it. If you think I'm judging them by typing the truth in that post, I can live with that.

But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. 11For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 12Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 13Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

14But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. 16For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

Most of my post was copy/pasted from 1 Cor but that does not seem Christian? lol

meh, not everyone has to like me.

Either you have the Spirit of God living inside you or you don't. Thats not judgemental, that's just a statement.

As a Brian that was raised in the same evangelical faith as cindylou, there is a certain "spin" that is put on all of the scripture to make it positive and relevant to believers in modern times.

For example, Alan Grayson recently ran a political ad that showed his opponent giving a speech at a religious retreat where he talked about the role of men and women in marriage.

Here it is...

This is Dan Websters comments in context...

I've never been a fan of submissive wiminz....the sex is bad. :)

That being said, slavery is the one morality issue Christianity has never been able to "spin." They can reject the Old Testament as having been "redeemed" by the teachings of Jesus but he never rejected slavery, the best you get is how severely you are allowed to beat a slave.

Raised in the church here too. Went to private christian school K-3, till we moved. When we moved the public school system where we were was actually pretty good, so off I went. Pretty much stopped going to church too. Oh I went a few times with parents or friends, but wasn't interested.

Around age 20 I started going to church again, got "saved", "baptised" yada yada. Was real into church, studying the bible, learning as much as I could from pretty much every "teacher" I could listen to. Of course I had enough sense not to just believe every interpretation. Funny how the same scripture can be interpreted so many different ways to fit whatever need/want arises.

I lead bible studies, prayer groups, people to christ. I served a few roles in the church over the course of several years. I was very involved. Oh and I didn't see myself as "religious", I had a "relationship".

I used to "judge the fruit" too, cindylou (I can speak christianese fluently). :D At least for a while. But then I was reminded that I don't know the hearts, only god does. But it sure is easy to say, "he's going to hell, and she is too!" and justify it through scripture. Thank god I wasn't condemning people to hell for all that long.

But hey, I kept learning and studying. I mean, I had questions about inconsistencies in the scriptures, so I had to. As I began studying actual history, oh were my eyes opened.

All of what I say in regards to the bible and religion or spirituality will be disregarded by christians of course, because I don't believe in the "holy trinity" and many other reasons. I am merely a heretic, who is damned to hell (well at least by christians).

This is where it gets upsetting. I'm not upset w/ anyone, just an idea, and right now, I just need more sleep. ha. I have a daughter that must be coming down w/ something. These debates can be fun at times but they leave me feeling very vulnerable because its so personal to me. I've quit talking about it IRL but it's hard when you feel like you want to tell someone "If only you could see what I see!" but I guess that's what you are trying to tell me and it keeps going in circles.

What disturbs me is this: I've only been a Christian for a little while, just a small number of years, but there is a huge difference in my life, the way I see and hear things, I can talk to God. So, am I crazy? That's what it has to be. I'm delusional. Or a liar.

You are not delusional, Cindylou, or a liar. You found something good in your life, it makes you happy and you want to share it cause u care about others and want to see them happy too. I think you are one of the good ones. Others may not see the world as you see it, but that does not make your beliefs any less true. Stick with what makes You happy and don't let anyone make you feel bad for that.

I don't think anyone is upset with you either. I'm certainly not. If your religion/relationship is making you happy, that is wonderful. I went through the same thing. Believe me, I was very into it. Wanted to learn as much as I could. Read and studied almost everything I could get my hands on.

I used to go home after listening to the preacher and do my own research to find out if I believed what he was saying. I felt it was my obligation/duty to do so (not for anyone else, just for me). Much like the Bereans who, "received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so." (Acts 17:11) It was that kind of dedication to the truth that lead me to believe...differently.

:)

lol good. I wasn't sure if you were trolling me or having fun w/ me :) lol If you want, tell me what you believe sometime :)

you familiar with the gnostic gospels at all?

interesting stuff. excluded from the bible of course because they didn't line up well with age old pagan sun worship. :)

I've heard of them. What do they say? What's their big picture?

wow, that would take a while. Several books have been written that summarize them.

I guess a very brief and poor summary would be to say they call into question the authority of the church. They emphasize self awareness and seeking knowledge as the way to understanding god.

Really though you should look into them on your own without any preconceived ideas from me.

Now that we've established Brian's are spiritual beings seeking only truth and enlightenment we should lobby for an amendment to the constitution that only people named Brian may hold high office....so say we all.
