Periodizing Heavy Training

For me it's my mental state, that goes first. I just don't have that drive anymore, yet I force myself to the gym, and sure enough, I hit some pr's. I feel it's more of a mental burn out than anything else. I am sure if I kept pushing upward, the body would go as well.
 
I don’t think I would increase the volume too much in the rest week, your body deserves a rest so that it can recover fully form those brutal workouts. For me a cruise week is going to the gym 2 or 3 times and kind of going through the motions, maybe 2 sets per body part just to get the blood pumping, nothing to failure, and maybe a bit of cardio

Here’s what Im doing (not too scientific, but seems to work for me, and its simple!)

Week off
6 –8 weeks building up weight (eg DC)
Cruise week
6 – 8 weeks continuing to build from previous (eg DC)
Week off
6 – 8 weeks building up weight (eg 5x5)
Cruise week
6 – 8 weeks continuing to build from previous (eg 5x5
Week off
