opinions on football training

hey, i need some opions on this. i have a friend who plays college ball, and their coach must be trying to kill them. he knocked off 2 days of lifting from their 4 and replaced them of 2 days of cardio.
well day 1 of cardio is tehm doing sauna work. they go in the suana do 100 step ups left leave for like a min or 2 go back 4 times then do spean squats 30 sec x 4 then run in place for 16 x 16 seconds. the next cardio workout is an hour of running stadium stairs with pushups for breaks and then an hour of 100 tire flips followed by 10 110 yard harness sprints. doesnt that seem like wwwaaaaaayyyyy too much? isnt that overtraining? shit, it would literally kill me.

I think that this type of training is crazy at this point in their "off-season" unless they are fat slobs who are also out of shape.

I always thought that the off-season was for building...then increase the cardio as the season approached.

this doesnt make sense or is this just me? y would you train like that. football is all power and quick explosive runs. how many times do you run 110 yards in football. y so much endurance?
i m new at this sport specific training but thats how i see it

endurance is crucial for football. i don't play at a collegiate level, but i guarantee you its exhausting as hell to go all four quarters, even though the actual playing time isn't much....

Haha you Amercians should take off your pads and helmets and play some real football, yeap Rugby Union or League ;)

generally speaking every person on the team has to play the full game, that's 80 mins. Each player has to be able to run the ball, tackle on defence, catch the high ball etc...

Anyway bakc to the topic - yeah coaches make the worst trainers

sheeeeeit.... take off your pads in the NFL and you will be in Christopher Reeve's shape in no time....

sheeit, take off your pads in the NFL and you will be paralyzed in no time... there are some fucking huge & crazy phenoms in american football!

True, but you yourself would be a big as well if your were playing on the field. There are just as big dudes in Rugby Union and league. Someone by the nam Jonah Lomu comes to mind. Imagine trying to tackle him head on with no pads and helmet ? :)

stats - 6'5" 125kg 276 lbs
100 metre sprint in 10.8 secs.....!!!

Good thing about pads is that it stops crazies like me trying to dead leg every person I tackle by using my head against their thigh, brings down the biggest man any day ;)

I take it you've never played football.

Is this where someone asks a serious question and then everyone turns it around and tells about how they know the "toughest person in the world"?

i never played football, nor do i really have much interest in it personally, but i will be the first one to admit they are the true athletes. there are no other sports that i think train more intensely. and before you people give me triathalon shit, spare me. they don't get all banged up and shit, travel all the time, and train 4-5 days a week, all while going to class. fuck that

yea poink i play college football and i agree with u. the coaches doing this isnt so much to put the people in shape although it does, its more for a mental toughnes thing and attitude. in the offseason u have to try and simulate what its like in the 4th quarter, where u have to dig deep down inside and push it with all uve got

But the type of endurance needed for football is not attained by running longer distances or doing stupid training like this.

By replicating the work and rest periods, and intensity of a football game in training, you can develop football-specific endurance (the ability to complete every play at 100% intensity - not run long distances, for example).

I could paraphrase from the book I read this (Complete Conditioning for Football by Arthur & Bailey), but it would take all day...

thank you

that was what i was talkin bout. when in football do you run 110 yards. each play last for 10 seconds so y would you have to train to run long distance. wouldnt it make more sense to have short intense 100% work outs like every play in football.

Not all football players play the same position nor do they have the same needs. There is no need for a lineman to train the same as a quarterback or a WR.

Making them train as a team and sometimes hating the coach for doing crazy stuff like this...will make them come together...as a team.

Indeed, that is very true to a certain extent.

However, I think that attitude isn't as applicable these days (or maybe more so with the egos flying around, who knows?) with the knowledge of training methods that coaches SHOULD have (or have access to people with the requisite knowledge).

I'd prefer my athletes to have an intelligent, methodical and scientific preparation. Their bodies are the ultimate weapon on the field, and can be controlled by a mind that can be trained through other methods - not methods of training that might actually HINDER their on-field performance!
