How the Tech Parade Passed Sony By
Damn. I knew things were bad in Japan but it's amazing how much the odds seem stacked against them recovering even from a global perspective. It will be interesting to see what happens. If they ever close shop and therefore bow out of the gaming industry, I wouldn't doubt Apple would be quick to take their place. Barring Nintendo (because Nintendo is...well...Nintendo), I think we would see a bit of role reversal on the side of Microsoft. Apple would be like what the Xbox was, and Microsoft would end up on the defensive, like Sony was, but probably a lot quicker seeing as how PS2 dominated their first round in. I think Microsoft would adjust their strategy to be more value-added and less restrictive to gain leverage in what would be a fiercely competitive space.
I also think a lot of Sony's in-house developers would have their pick of who to make games for, and chances are most of them would go to one or the other, seeing as how they most-all are part of a tight knit development culture. That in turn would be a major advantage for whoever gets them, as it would primarily determine which box all the millions of Playstation fans will get.
But I'm getting ahead of myself. Next gen hasn't even started yet, and both Sony and Microsoft are yet to even reveal the specs of their next consoles.
