I've been checking out galleries lately, and saw those interesting pics of a very muscular grandfather. What's up? How about some details?

Nice work...was wondering when she was going to see this thread and reply. Guess that's what significant others are for.

she's at her sister's doggy/fishy sitting. i doubt she'll be on tonight.

but like any good significant other, i'll keep it up for her to see.

oh my...a thread for me! I feel so honored! ha ha!

JJ, yeah that is my "Pappy Joe"--he had his own gym when he lived in Hawaii. He was a trainer before it was cool...he didn't take any shit then, and doesn't take any now!

Anyhow, I'll have to pick his brain and have him tell me some stories so I can share them...he's getting pretty old now, but my dad (his son) still goes over his house in the morning and trains him. His equilibrium is off and he broke his hip about two+ years ago, causing him to undergo hip replacement surgery. Before the surgery, he would wake up around 4 am and lift weights and go for a walk around the neighborhood...this is at 70+ years old! Every morning he has oatmeal with a variety of herbal supps and my favorite, Papaya enzymes...all which he soaks the night before! He's been doing this for as long as I can remember.

Okay, so on to the good 'ole days--he was in the first two Mr. Olympia's (I'll have to double check) and placed 2nd. He also got "best abls" a couple times. He's been featured on the old "Strength & Health" magazine covers and has trained with a lot of respectable body builders in his time.

Thanks for the thread JJ--I need to drag my ass over his house and spend some quality time while he's still here. His method of training is shut up, train hard, eat as much as you can...pretty old school, but hey he knows his shit. Those pictures don't lie...no airbrushing, no "enhancements" or even fancy protein powders back then. It was just a lot of iron and a lot of food! Plain and simple. I distinctly remember watching him bouncing a medicine ball on some guys abs while he was 1/2 way crunching up...he says, "fat doesn't like pain!" I think he's right!

His garage has been converted to a gym...complete with a power rack, leg press, cables, heavy bag, full rack of dumbbells, and a lot more...it's pretty sweet. There is a stereo system, stack of clean towels that my grandmother stockpiles, a fridge full of bottled water, cement floors, and various old timer pictures on the wall (along with the most recent comedic photoshopped picture of some of the guys that train there...always a good laugh).

There are a lot of people that have gone through that gym. My dad has been training high school athletes for years now...even me when I played ball! He doesn't do it for money or anything...just because he likes it. He likes to see them get bigger, stronger, and become better athletes--many which have gone on to college with scholarships, etcetera.

I hope this doesn't sound like I'm tooting my families horn...I am just really proud to be a part of it all. It was his gym where I learned that form was first, then the weight. It was his gym where I learned proper gym ettiquete--which is why I get so irritated at the knuckleheads at "my" gym. Like many others, that gym has represented a lot of personal struggle and success.
