New to martial arts. wing chun?

Hi, I'm new to the whole martial arts scene. I found out about a school that teaches wing chun close by. Could someone explain what wing chun is best suited for.

I'm hoping to learn how to defend myself, discipline myself and at the same time get fit!

Do the reading , it will help you to now what to listen for when you go in , unless another poster or I can either GreenLight or RedFlag the Sifu right off by reputation .

Wing Chun at its best is a GREAT system of Martial Arts - at its worst , its utter garbage , and should be avoided . There are a LOT of ppl calling themselves "Grandmaster" out there in WC circles -

And most of THOSE cant fight temselves out of a stale wetnap .

I agree. Wing Chung in the U.S will be hard to find a legit school. Althought it's easy to find one over seas. LOL! but probably not an option.

that's true of most styles tho
get lucky you are near a school that teaches hardcore training
get unlucky and you are near a school that teaches performance art and tells you your a badass

Wich is clearly System-Bashing goes Unchecked .

Now dont get me Wrong , I know that WC circles have thieir McDojos , in fact Im commenting on the biggest pool of them in this thread as it happens . And I suppose that the buiggest issue that I have with it is that the guy dosent even PRETEND that hes capable of putting up a reasonable argument about the Mechanics , Physics , Principles , or Training methodology of the system itself . In fact , I think that he probably dosnet know anything more than that 15-20 years ago 2 wing chun guys made public idiots of themselves . Heck , he PROBABLY dosent even know that the incident happened in the 80s . Most that bring it up dont .

I just think that if youre GOING to be Derisive about something that you should at least KNOW somethign about it first . Not only that , but such comments have the ability to take $ out of the pockets of what MIGHT just be a Legitimately hardworking instructor that actually raises the combat skills of his students . Not to mention hearding posters tward Second-Rate schools simply because of the style that they teach .

And what , if anything , do you know about Wing Chun ? Whats it about , how does it work ? Whats it based on , from a scientific standpoint ? What are its major strategems and tactics ?

How much time have you spent in Wiung Chun classes ? Whos Lineage ? How often did you train and for how long ? Did you ever do any Sparring there or was it a total McDojo ?
