I believe that Plato's idea of the utopian society is perfect. He based on the ancient Spartan ideals, which were:

The state is the number one priority
Everyone receives military training (males more extensively than females)
At an early age male children are taken away to be trained extensively in the arts of conducting war and combat
Self defense is taught to both sexes
The strong children are raised more adhering than the weaker ones (because of which there is always sibling rivalry, but in the good way.)
Child birth and the spreading of the family line is paramount
Poetry and Thespian theatrics are kept at a minimum so as not to distract people from the importance of the state
Physical fitness is encouraged and enforced
The females have equal say in matters- and sometimes even moreso then men.
Females do little house work or crafting, whereas those tasks are left to "inferior races"
Race status is not based on preconceived notions on skin color or religion..Rather they are based on the ability of the race (country) to conduct warfare: if you get conquered, you're going to work for Sparta

i hear you bro..im in the same boat...i try for the most part to give some kind of view or to ask a worthy question....sometimes we just have fun. but i like deep thought, so i usually respond to those threads....life is interesting and being able to bring people together to talk of such issues is very cool indeed.

Sparta's modern day equivalent is / was the USSR, and other than being a morally bankrupt state sponsored mass murderer of its own people, I guess it worked out OK.

The logic of that proof is flawed. No mention of whether all r's are q's or whether q is a finite set including only p's and r's. In that proof "r is not a p" is an equally valid assumption.

I really hate internet debates, because since you cannot talk face to face, the person can google their answers, or simply will keep talking about stuff they know nothing about. From my previous experience, I bring up a good point right after they have posted, then they go on about semantics, grammar, four hour rebuttals, your-mother jokes, etc etc. So I really do not see the point...

Anyways, Matt, I highly recommend you pick up the book The Spartans by Paul Cartledge, you will then see how different Sparta is from the corrupt Soviet Regime. As for the individual and state thing, well, lets play word association:

Sparta- Pride
Soviets- Conscription

Again read the book, I dont have the time, energy or patience for internet debates. Oh and the last thing Sparta should be associated with is moral bankruptcy. True, Cleomenes I was not a morally sound man, but he got what he deserved. However, look up Leonidas or Pausinas the Regent, or King Archidamus.

Sparta was a brutal regime that suppressed human rights; militarism dominated their thinking, not freedom. This proved their undoing. The available information is highly limited and the Greeks have received favorable treatment by history.

I know all about that period. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll check it out.

iteresting are you saying that the basis of ones existence is the selfish pursuit of self interest?
I can see that it is needed for a certain level of existence and therefor needed, but how one take that trait to its Zenith and claim it to be moral?
when I mean Zenith is that if one can own a piece of property then who or what is to say that a person can not own a State or huge expanse of land?
and if that is true what if others say Indegenous people need that land for survival? who is right?

The concept of submission to the state is the ultimate violation.

I don't know a lot about Greek city states other than Sparta and Athens. I do know (and it is little discussed) that they owe a lot of their ideas on democracy to the Jews; as the Hellenic culture has influenced Jews as well.

no it does not it says that a ceratin amount of property is needed for survival and the respect of ones own personal rights. Including the pursuit of happiness which can be defined as food , shelter, productive capacity, and privacy.

However we run into a dillema when there are no limits to this accumulation and a person or corporation (legally a person) can own a unlimited amount in most cases. where is the barrier?

I am not sure about Athens, but Spartans were not submitted to the state. They were just merely patriotic. To them patriotism and the state were as part of the moral and daily life as much as , say, American pie and rock and roll is to an American. There was a STRONG sense of bonding in Spartan communities; the males were taken at an early age for Agoge and raised as a tight knit warrior unit and trained in the art of war. These young children only had themselves to look towards for hope and because of this, Spartan hoplites share an almost brotherly bond in combat. They knew their role was protection of the state, and they accepted it... they did not feel like they were forced into this role. Its like if a foreign army invaded Canada. I would instinctively feel a need to pick up arms and defend my ideals, believes and preserve the Canadian way of life (beer and beavers!). I think you are blurring the line between servantude and patriotism to the state. As for democray, Sparta was extremely undemocratic and hated Athens who was. Equality? Genders were extremely equal. There was this old story in Sparta:

An Athenian woman asked Gorgo (wife of Leonidas) :
"How come only you Spartan women can control the Spartan men?"
And Gorgo replied:
"Because we are the only women who give birth to real men."

That should give you a sense of equality in the household. True the Helots were basically indentured servants, but they proved to be Sparta's inferior in combat so they were conquered. And it was customary in those times for conquering forces to take prisoners /slaves from the losers- such was the spoils of war. However, thats another story, and if you want I can elaborate, but now I must go to a job interview.
 
What annoys me is that Omega simply stated that he would like more intellectual discussion on this forum, as would a lot of us, and people like Yarg! jump on him about his spelling and grammar. If I had to point out every time someone did not use proper English on this forum, my keyboard would wear out in a day.

I've got both.

What is it with men, when women talk without kissing a man's (boy's) ass it always has to to lack of a man or sex? Are we really that pathetic to you? Or is your mother just that pathetic?

In addition, to the man and the sex, I have a nice house, a nice car, new kayak, hybrid bike, my own (successful) business, a new office and a home gym replete with a weights section and cardio area.
