I think that the best we can do is try to make good decisions.
Whether we always succeed or not does not mean we are good or bad people.
For example, while I do not support pot smoking, if people choose to grow their own, then I think that is a better decision than bankrolling the lifestyle/politics of druglords.
It's not a black and white world, and no one is wholly good or wholly bad.
"Nutritional alarmists" are probably just trying to help people, and while they can be holier-than-thou, at least they are trying to do good.
I think I can make my own decisions about what is best for me, and I have to believe that the general populace is similarly capable.
If they are not, and make poor decisions, then it is not for lack of information.

1) People should be making their own decisions. Government can't make competent decisions for them.

2) It's each person's job to do their own research. Let the buyer beware. Ceding this oversight to any third party at your own risk.

3) Address the big stuff first. If you're a 20lbs overweight pot smoker who watches TV three hours a day, don't fret over the RDA of vitamen A -- get off your ass.

4) My list of priorities (i.e. diet, exercise, sleep) may be different than someone else's list of priorities. That's what makes (1) and (2) so important.

If you were more informed, and in my estimation more intelligent, you would understand why being exposed to so called "trace amounts" of toxins from childhood on can severely compromise your endocrine system, among many other things. If childrens endocrine functions don't properly develop, they'll be stuck that way for life. A fact that I suspect is not lost on certain people. You're living in a shell, and that's fine...you're not really needed anyway.

but with certain things there is a point......if you're still smoking a pack or more a day than, well, that's your call. The problem comes when people are getting exposed to things that they "more than likely" would not allow themselves to if they knew exactly what it was. This is why the food industry fights labeling regulations "tooth and nail". Because they know that once some people actually see what's in the food, and test it....they'll find what's wrong. I'm waiting for the next high margin cheap filler they'll come up with cause high fructose corn syrup has about run it's course, too many people know about it now.

Diabetes and hypothyroidism are definitely no laughing matter, and anything you can do to help prevent your children getting these diseases is worth looking at from the outset of pregnancy.

This was my primary point, above all other things.

I have GI problems. I read labels very closely because I have several things that I cannot tolerate. I eat very little processed food to begin with, but to find out they're coating the skins of foods that we might be eating (like apples), with something, and then aren't legally obligated to inform us of this I find really upsetting. Right up there with GMO foods (and one of the reasons I dislike GMO foods is that there seems to have been an increase in food related allergies since GMOs moved into the marketplace and frankly, most of the modifications make the foods more resistant to pesticides, which means if you're eating GM food you're probably getting at least a double dose of chemicals, and I simply do not believe that all pesticides can be washed off, I believe plants absorb chemicals just like they absorb water).

I don't mind paying a premium for organic foods, some people want a new car regularly, or take expensive vacations, my husband and I choose to spend our money on high quality food and dietary supplements. What I find infuriating is that the food industry develops this un-natural crap and shoves it down people's throats, and the government agency that's supposed to "protect" us turns a blind eye to everything and doesn't push through more decisive labeling laws. I just want to have the option to make an informed decision, I don't think that's unreasonable or unrealistic.

:cold: I really hate the winter.

Actually, my husband, through his status as a Mohawk, holds dual citizenship and could claim like an acre of land up there on the reservation but ... shit I fucking hate the winter! I fantasize about moving to the beach and never having to see another snowflake as long as I live!
