my new personal trainers thoughts on Carb loading with dextrose

ok, I got into a minor argument with my personal trainer today, she asked what kind of supplementation I have been using, I told her about the post workout dextrose and ala, she barely new what ala stood for and continued to tell me that she takes ala, lol
She said that 135g carbs pw is waay to much and the whole idea is no good, she is a very experienced trainer and competetive bb her self, with over 15yr training experience, I told her how ala works and allows muscle to hold more glucose, I need to find some good reads to print out for her, because I have had nothing but good effects from dextrose loading after workouts with 6oomg ala. macro, ulter, got any good info to convince her its worth while?

She's the experienced personal trainer, but you have to educate her??

that my thoughts exactly, I am a personal trainer too, lol and I know she gets results and quick, but hey I dont think shes up to date on supplementation, she follows the parillo plan 50/50 same amount carbs and protein post workout, theres a few things about parillos plan I dont agree with.

That's the problem with alot of trainers. They know what works for them, and generally for others, but they don't keep up with new ideas and new supplementation.

I had a trainer a few years ago who was excellent with working with my form, and great for spotting, but I had to outline my goals with him and educate him on what I wanted done. It ended up working pretty well, but it was kinda expensive for a glorified workout partner.

I recently read an article stating that for a 210 lb person, you should take in 55 grams of fast acting carbs immediately after a workout. They said that pure orange juice is a good way to get your carbs. The window closes within 30 minutes. Somewhere on the internet, there is a calculator that calculates the amount of pw carbs for your bodyweight.

right on bro, you're right, I've read from flex mags and heard from my personal trainer, you need to take in carbs AND protein immediately after a workout and the window is 30mins as geoffgarst said. Carbs replenishes your energy levels and protein is rapidly absorbed, this prevents muscle breakdown for energy and the protein drinks will keep your nitrogen balance in check. You know the drill, always keep a bodybuilder's body in positive nitrogen balance.
I personally have a pre-workout carb+protein shake an hour before and another after a workout!!! It works a dream!!

peace ;)

Actually his calculations are NOT off. It depends on what he weighs. For a 200+ lb man, anywhere from 75-150grams of carbs is great post-workout. I am almost 230lb at 5'8 and i consume anywhere from 75-110grams post workout, and other times of the year its about 135grams.

My post-workout shake is

75-100grams dextrose
40 grams whey iso
10 grams creatine micro
300-750mg of r-ALA

the amount I take in is what swolecat had reccomended in a swoled up diet a while back, so I guess maybe his calulations are off

Whoa!

Considering THAT source, then I stand corrected.

That is more than I have heard of, but I know Swole to be very knowledgeble regarding such things.

I will therefore attribute this to MY lack of knowledge and look upon it as an opportunity to learn.

(Yeah, you read that right, thats a frame of mind that far far far too few people take on these boards IMHO).

its my experience that these trainers that have been around for awhile arent very open to new ideas period. They are stuck on there ways, even if there ways work ,they are missing out.

Lyle Mcdonald says that 200 lbs guy needs only 45 grams of dextrose postworkout

That's reasonable. 135g of carbs seems overkill to me unless you are gonna use slin along with it. JMHO though. Wouldn't mind seeing why SC suggests it.

Excess carbs are great when you want to bulk, that is if you want the bulk to be fat. You need both carbs and protein post workout, the sooner the better. If you want to do it rigts cabs and protein before your workout then agin right after. 50/50 is a reasonable ratio. 50 to 60 grams of each.:)
