First pic: the thin piece on the right inserts into the middle of the bolt on the left, however the small black tip of the small silver piece is actually a threaded piece that looke like a screw of some sort that snapped. Also the dark part on the right of the handle of the bolt looks to be bent or damaged and I think thats what causes the bolt to have trouble cycling into place.
Second pic: is a close up of the tip of the smaller piece with the black threaded part that broke (shitty pic sorry).

This stuff is fucked up and Im going to need a whole new bolt I bet.

Hard to see that second pic, but it looks like your firing pin broke off the striker assembly?

That still doesn't account for the discharge to me though.

I would say absolutely replace the bolt, If I were you I would talk to Mossberg and get a brand new rifle. I would bet they will offer you one after they hear of what happened.

Im going to raise some hell and see what I can get.

All I'll say is I always keep a gun loaded for work, but I never store firearms loaded. Not because of the chance of a accidental discharge, but to prevent spring fatigue.

Take it to a gunsmith tomorrow and let him evaluate it first. Take pictures of every part and piece you can then call, from the smith's shop.

I agree...will add a whole lotta credibility when you call.

Given what happened, they should be content to 'settle' with you by giving you a whole new super-deluxe best they make kinda rifle in exchange for your agreeing not to sue them or publicize the incident.

So its about 1:30 and I just went to sleep a few minutes earlier and I wasnt quite alseep, kind of that inbetween stage and I hear this huge SLAM! in the apartment building, was so loud couldnt tell if it was me or the next door units. It really jolted me out of bed so I thought it was either A) neighbor slamming something against the wall B) someone kicked my door open and it slammed against the wall C) car ran into my apartment building.

I grabbed my pistol to investigate the rest of my apartment and didnt find anything awry, no car hit the apartment either. So I figured a neighbor hit the wall with something, but fuck it would have to be a baseball bat with barry bonds swinging for the amount of noise it made. So I get back in bed and after a minute I smell some sort of burnt smell, but not like gunpowder because I know what thats all about. So now Im thinking something in the building blew up and that was the noise. I check out my AC and water heater and oven and its all good but just for the hell of it I decided to open my closet door because it shares the wall with the neighbors. I open the door and there are pieces of foam and black plastic all over the place and I look at my gun case and the top end is blown apart and I think, fuck this didnt just happen. Then I look up and there is a hole in the ceiling where the bullet went and I think, I know there are people that live above me. So now I start to shit myself thinking about the 3 year old laying in bed who just took a bullet from a .270 hunting rifle or something. I throw my clothes on and grab my phone ready to dial 911 and rush up to the unit above me and start pounding on the door like a bat out of hell. It took a minute for someone to get to the door, which scared the fuck out of me of course, but finally a little college student chick answers the door fully clothed and asked what the hell was going on and the first thing out of my mouth was "Oh great, youre alive!" LOL. I told her what happened and she said she didnt even fucking hear the gun go off LOL. Then I said, youve got a hole in your floor I guarantee it. So turns out she has the same floor plan as me and I went to her closet and sre enough there was a nice hole where the trim of the wall met the floor. Turns out the bullet went into the wall vertically and didnt hit her water heater nearby or anything else. Talk about a lucky motherfucker.
Before anyone asks the gun was on safety and was secured in its hunting case. Turns out the mechanism that holds the firing pin back gave out. I think I will be having a chat with Mossberg about this tomorrow.

cliffnotes: dave has a hunting rifle that went off in his closet in the middle of the night and blew through the unit above him. no one got hurt but it was scary as fuck.

I'm not going to read 6 pages, prolly already been posted, BUT, why would you have one in the tube? Most of the time you try NOT to shoot somebody and the sound of chambering a round is all it takes to get them the hell outa there, if you need a round, click click and it's there...
