My grandma's death causes family drama

I can't believe how messed up my mother's side of the family can be. My grandma died a couple of weeks ago. She has a son that is paranoid schizophrenic. That's a clinical diagnosis. He collects guns which is a scary thought considering about 20 years ago he shot his own brother. Anyway he gets paid SSI disability and has for his entire life. He has lived his life in grandma's house and she paid most of his living expenses and he used his disability check for pleasure. He's always had a new vehicle to drive and plenty of money for guns. We think he has about 100 firearms. Basically now that grandma is gone he's a 58 yr old man that's never had to live on his own. Under SSI rules he is not allowed to own assets. He always titled his cars in grandma's name. Under the terms of the will, he is allowed to stay in grandma's house as long as he wants but he does not own it. If he vacates the house then it's to be sold and I get 40% of the proceeds. I am not too concerned about that. What worries me is that my mentally ill uncle has sort of gone crazier after realizing there's nobody to take care of him. My mother is the executor of the will. He's already accused her of stealing grandma's jewelry. He also claims the government planted a chip in his head. I'm afraid that he might harm my mother. He's a keg of dynamite waiting to explode. We had to hire two off duty police officers to provide security at the funeral. He showed up with a car load of ammunition. The cops frisked him and searched the car before letting him in. My mother is probably going to hand over all of the executor duties to a lawyer. I think that's the best idea.

how in the HELL does he have a permit for firearms if hes mentally ill with a documented track record?

I agree, this is dangerous

sorry man..I don't know what one does for something like this...the only thing that comes to mind is wait until hes officially delusional and haev him commited and remove the firearms while hes in (have every firearm smithed to shorten firing pins and give em back perhaps? idk)

I really sympathize and hope this turns out ok for you and your family :(

they dont give mental people gun permits something isn't right here

Clearly he sounds like a threat to himself and others, obviously he doesn't have all of those guns registered and no reason in the world for that much dynamite, call me a bitch but I'd tip the police to raid his house and hopefully have him committed in a softcore place that way he is supervised, unarmed and taken care for.

Mentally ill + guns = danger/ticking time bomb.

In my state there are no laws that govern the sale of firearms between two private individuals. The only time a background check is done is if you buy a gun from a licensed gun dealer. People sell guns through classified ads in the newspaper. My uncle that got shot by him did not report it to the police because of pressure from grandma. I wish he had pressed charges. They probably would have sent him to a mental hospital and they might have been able to give him proper mental care. My mother's lawyer is working to try to find a way to have his guns confiscated. However, I'm afraid that's just going to piss him off and he can easily buy another gun and come after her.

Another fucked up thing is that he DID manage to get a concealed weapon permit! Getting a CCW in my state is easier than getting a driver's license. All you have to do is take a safety class and apply for the permit with the state police. If you don't have a criminal record you get a permit. However my uncle has a criminal record. He was busted for drugs once. If only my other uncle that got shot would have gone through with the charges we might have legal grounds to do something.

I haven't felt anxiety like this in my entire life.

The problem is proving in court that he's a danger. His shooting his brother doesn't count for anything because it was never reported. From a legal perspective it's like it never happened. I realize that not all schizophrenics are violent but he obviously is. The lawyer said this was one of the most messed up situations he has seen on a will and that's his specialty.

if he had all vintage or same model guns he could claim he's collecting but I'm sure this is not the case since his pathology renders individuals to be disorganized most of the time, Im guessing he just has a shit load of guns of all size, brand and caliber, if this is the case he is hoarding guns or "arming" and there should be legal statues to do something about it, if you warn the police about it they should be able to do something, also if he is getting a check for mental instability his permit can and should be revoked, which the police would investigate also, I understand there were nevr charges pressed but GSW have to be very well documented for legal purposes, maybe there is still a paper trail to your uncles shooting that u can use, obviously not to press charges but as evidence of mental instability, also, is there anything else that he does that may qualify him for investigation? battery assault, theft drugs?

We tried the state's mental hygiene commitment procedure. Basically you can swear out a warrant on someone and they will take him to the state mental hospital for an examination to determine if he should be hospitalized. Unfortunately something went wrong and they couldn't find him before the warrant expired.

I think Japan has a good model for handling gun control. Their murder rate is something like 5% compared to the USA. I've always said that I would give up my gun if everyone else gave up theirs. However that will never happen here in the USA.
