Muscle vs. Fat

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place, it's not really diet nor is it Medical.
I know muscle is heavier than fat. Does anybody know the ratio? Muscle to fat 4:1?
This will help settle an on-going argument here at work.
thanks

Muscle is not heavier than fat. A pound is a pound...

I think what you mean is that muscle is denser than fat....since, obviously, a pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat. The difference is that muscle occupies less space per unit of measure than fat. I have heard it said that the "space" occupied by a pound of muscle is 22% less than one pound of fat - but I don't recall the source so take it with a grain of salt.

1.1 g/cm^3 vs 0.9 g/cm^3, im sure there are more precise values out there but that's all I can remember off the top of my head...and it would make sense if you think about people in a swimming pool, water is 1.0 g/cm^3

You can calculate it from there, I remember calculating a cube of 7.2 cm dimensions for fat...muscle is for sure smaller...too lazy to do it now though, but its not too difficult a calculation (I'm quite the geek btw but it's nice to quantify stuff)
