SPAT,
Just reviewed a paper by Elbers AJP 1999 looking at the effects of sex steroids on body composition in transsexuals. Interesting that not only did E and P administration increase both visceral and sub-Q body fat (Ab, Hip and thigh) in the guys to chicks (reverse happened with chicks to guys) except for the visceral fat (increased in both groups), but in the M-F trannys, their 24 hr urinary cortisol excretion increased significantly with E and P treatment and remained elevated for the duration of the study (12 months). No change in the F-M. Sort of interesting. Still wonder where it is coming from and what comes first.
The study on the anorexics confirms what I was saying about the peripheral vs visercal fat accumlation with elevated cortisol (cortisol causing peripheral lipolysis but central lipogenesis).
You might also want to check out a paper by Stumvoll, J Clin Endocrinol Metab 85: 3720, 2000. Looked at the effects of insulin on supression of systemic, intramuscular and sub-Q lipolysis.
