When faced with a chance to EITHER make more money than you ever have in your life... or be involved in a situation that is absolutely perfect for your professional 'art' but not that stellar in the effort/money ratio....

which would you chose?

If you're happy, have talent, and vision, it will show in your work. The money should come with solid work ethic.

it depends.
does the job with more money allow you time to enjoy it?
is your professional 'art' something that you could do for fun on the side/weekends?
is the lower paying job something that you KNOW you'd enjoy, or might it become a chore eventually?
would it mean that you struggle to make ends meet?

I somewhat took that challenge on with my current job and love was the answer. I work long hours in a very stressful, demanding environment - if I didn't love working I would be a wreck.

Waiting for MattTheSkywalker to rip into this thread, lol.

Why can't you have both?

Well it looks like you beat him(MTS) to it.

But if I for one, had to choose, it would be doing something I love.

Depending on the degree I would probably choose money. This assumes that I have ample time off to enjoy the money i've earned.

I have been working my ass off to get a promotion I thought I wanted and got it. I have no free time, stress out the ass, and so much bullshit to deal with it's ridiculous. Upside is, I've made twice already this year than I did last year. Just nothing to do with it.

My profession is hardly an art.....if I didn't have a responsibility to my children and wife, I would love to teach high school and coach high school football.....but alas, teachers are the least compensated of all public servants.......I make a pantload of money, big flipping deal......it's knowing that my family will never want for anything, all the while having the values that my father instilled in me, passed on to them......that gives me peace of mind.

Ultimately, I say you do what makes you happy. :)

I say follow your dreams Mr. Smoove.

That's the problem with most Americans it seems. Everyone is infected with the idea that their goal in life is to make more and more money. This has been greedily promoted by corporations as they know they can get more hours out of one person rather than hiring more "resources" to which would increase spending. One's goal should be to "supplement" life with one's job so that one can enjoy more materials, not the other way around. A job shouldn't be the only thing in one's life. So many people make so much money yet they never get to fully enjoy it.

That's exactly it. I don't want the boat, porsche, biggest house, just to keep up with the Jonses'. I just want to be able to be done with it by the time I'm 50. If I keep doing the way that I've been so far, I'll be promoted to a position where I'll more than triple my current pay, plus have more time to live. It's a means to an end I suppose, but right now I'm working so much I don't know which way is up. I dream that I'm at work, at home working, traveling for work, etc. When I wake up I don't feel like I've slept at all. God I need to get back to the gym.

The short answer is do what you love and it will make up for making less.

The long answer is you might look into doing the high paying gig for a while so you can save up some money and then hopefully start doing something you love. Conversely the thing you love may expand and make it just a monetarily worthwhile but be more personally satisfying. This is a hard question to deal with. I would take a paycut to do something I really love as opposed to making what I do now and not enjoying it that much.

Love. Money is cool during the first months but then, you woek ethic may be challenged. If you love your job, are good at it and have a perfect work ethic, then trust me, money will come soon enough.

as you who know me already know... i will go for love....

after all, what else is there? the rest is smoke and mirrors.

Good luck bro! You won't be sorry.

I walked away from everything I had, am basically flat broke and everytime I look at my little girl I say "fuck the money" its was all worth it.

OK Hansel, here you go.

Of course you can have both - pitbullstl seems like he does. But for the purpose of the thread...hard to answer.

I know that money is the fastest route to freedom, the freedom that allows you to have a no limits life, to experience everything you wanted, to be reborn as pure energy absent the constraints of the temporal earth, or most of them anyway. And it is this freedom of the spirit that allows your soul to soar like it cannot when there are temporal constraints.

People worry about life after death when they don't even live life after birth.

In theory, love should do the same - set your soul free to soar to heights beyond what you thought possible, to allow you to change the lives of others. But our current world has constrained our spirits, attemtping to enslave us to the things of this world.

We are killing ourselves for a bag of shitty dreams sold to us by second rate advertisers themselves trying to eke out a shitty living. Break the chains and set yourself free, however you must.

Both money and love can set us free if you are of right mind. pitbullstl is quicker to dismiss money as "not a big deal" because he has already structured his life, more or less, around his family goals and providing for his future...or so it seems. I admire the relationship he has with his family.

I have no such constraints (though he would never call them constraints, I am speaking now from my perspective) so to me the idea of introducing anything which would limit my vision, my mind and my spirit is untenable.

So I answer for myself - the empire must grow. Once the freedom is in place, the money becomes irrelevant, and the vision - a vision of a world with more people who think like I do - a world imprinted with my mind forever, becoems the new focus.

The empire grows. The love waits. But not forever.

i think manny says it all...i know so many people who watch their lives slip away for the mighty dollar, missing opportunities, people , loosing perspectives, etc etc...they are extremely miserable, it shows on them, not only in their lives, but physically too....it "can" be an early grave...

We are more alike then you will ever know. The love of a family of your own will be there for your taking, when you are ready. :)

As far as dismissing money, never. I am fully aware that a life without, would provide such constraints on my time, that the core soul of my being ( the relationship I have with my wife and kids) would suffer terribly.

Basicly on a six month vacation, could be a lot worse.

The house is out of control. It's so much bigger than I thought it would be, and the tower is not even framed yet.

The kitchen and pantry are framed and looking good. Question for you: what do you think of down draft systems for ranges?

Money...hands down...you can always take the time later on after youve made the money to have things perfect...even better than youd hope cause now you have all this extra money and less stress

if you think having lots of money reduces stress, you live on planet Zircon. it makes your stress level go up about 1000000% and there are no easy answers to the stressors.

For those of you who can't grasp the concept of this thread.

Love= a job that he will injoy but not make a ton of money.

Money= job that pays a lot but isn't something he really wants to do.

The love part has nothing to do with women, appliances, or monkeys.

Cheers,
Scotsman

It's called sarcasm. The point of this thread is obvious, but thanks anyway for pointing it out.

money can't buy me love. So i'll take true romance!

I say stick with doing what you love...I personally have always known what I wanted to do. So I did whatever it took to get where I wanted to go. It has taken me awhile but I finally have exactly what I've been working so hard for and the money has come with it. You have to put in the effort for what you love, what your passion is. Everything else will eventually fall into place.
