NewScience

I was told tonite in the gym that Mike Mentzer died of an apparent heart attack and that his brother Ray, who had been suffering with a blodd disorder, committed suicide.

Can anyone confirm this?

It is very sad but true, I am not sure about Ray but it was said that Mike had a heart attack. Very sad indeed :(

Yes, very sad indeed. BTW are those pictures doctored like the musclemag ones? If not then Mentzer had one of the best if not the best physique I have ever seen.:bawling:

They're not doctored. Mentzer did have one of the best physiques ever. In fact he was the first one to score a perfect at the Olympia if I recall correctly.

and one of my favs. he'll be missed. but i as well am not sure that ray committed suicide, i think it was stress induced, he was a very sick man lately

I was a big Mike Mentzer fan as well. I even got a chance to speak with him for about an hour at the MM2K seminar in Las Vegas.

Mike did not stay in shape after he retired from competition. Dan Duschaine commented about Mikes shape after the seminar when someone wrote the magazine claiming Mike was training for the Masters Olympia.

Mike is one of the first bodybuilders to admit steroid use. He told a magazine that he used Dianabol befor contests.

He will be missed.

they still don't know how did ray die, it's all rumors about if he committed to suicide, but maybe

A cortesy of Flex magazine:
legendary bodybuilding competitor and writer, died suddenly Saturday, June 9, of an apparent heart attack. Mentzer’s body was discovered by his younger brother Ray Mentzer Sunday in the apartment they shared in Redondo Beach, California. Then, in a shocking development, Ray Mentzer was found dead Tuesday morning, June 12. The cause of death has not been determined as of this time.

in my opinion, Ray killed his brother by a poison that cause a sudden heart attack and he was sure that investigations will stop as his brother(Mike) is already suffering from heart disease, then Ray killed himself 3days after, lol!:D

well, your opinion sucks big time!! The brothers deserve some decent respect for god sake! They were an inspiration, and will be missed...

go to hell you fucking cunt. learn some respect, even if you were joking.

Mike was great. Nice photos! That poison comment is highly speculative. Where does that come from . . . ?

but it was not enough to win.
His belly stood out and they nailed him.
Nowadays your belly may stand out. Now, one can win without calves.

Yeah its kinda pathetic! Yeah the news is true bro. Althoug i think Ray died of complications while in the hospital....not suicide.

I went to a seminar with Mike and Boyer Coe,Mike was an awesome man,he didn't look down on you sure do miss him and those days.

This thread is 3 years old now. Surely by now, the official cause of Ray's death is known. Anyone?
I just recently found out about the deaths of the brothers....so sad. Years ago I was a plump little duckling that would ride my bike to the Mentzer's gym in Redondo Beach. I had never worked out before - and I looked it. The gym scared me a bit but got some basic training from Benny Podda (spelling?) and went from there. I was never paid much attention to by the big dogs, but I stuck it out successfully.

Some years later I lost the braces on my teeth, grew my hair, got a boob job and had brought awesome definition to my body due to training my ass off continually......well, I became a dancer at the Wild Goose in Inglewood and Mike came to see me sometimes. I don't remember exactly what he had to drink, whiskey maybe. I'd do a couple of table dances for him and then we'd just talk. I just remember it being a warm, sweet time. A great memory. He was a nice guy and made me feel like a million bucks.

RIP guys. You made your mark in this world. Whatever the circumstances of your passing, I hope you are happy now. God bless.

Love,
Lauren

They both had congenital heart defects which caused their deaths. Their father died from the same condition around the same age.

Mike Mentzer was known for his HIT Training routines - reach positive and negative failure in every lift. I have found it almost impossible to lift to this extreme everytime. I think his heart attack may have been due to amphetamine use, it also explains his ability to lift HIT as much as he did. He was a pioneer in the world of sports and strength training, HIT vs Periodization is still a big discussion. Mentzer had a lot to do with this. His legacy will always be remembered............... As for Ray I never heard he committed suicide - if he did what a shame.

Monday morning, June 11, 2001, was a sad day for bodybuilding, Mike Mentzer has passed away June 9th. Ray, his brother, who is also suffering from illnesses, found him.

To compound the loss of Mike, on June 11th, at approximately 9:00 PM, Ray died in his sleep. Ray suffered from kidney failure caused by Berger's Disease.

Both brothers lived in Redondo Beach, and they shared an apartment together. Both brothers had a history of health problems, including heart problems. Mike was 49, Ray was 47.

Although Ray was often thought of as Mike's younger bodybuilder he was a formidable bodybuilder in his own right. His 1979 Mr. America win made him and Mike the only brothers to have won the title. Although he stopped competing in 1982 he continued to train as hard as ever and eventually surpassed Mike in size reaching a then-unheard-of 270 lbs. in the mid-80's!"

couldn't find many specifics other than this.here
