Michael Phelps and his 10,000 calorie diet.

Can anyone explain how this could even be possible. He says his trainers make him eat anywhere from 8 to 10,000 calories everyday. And on top of that he eats anything he wants too, it's crazy.

They listed an example of his breakfast and it is absolutely nuts. He is scarfing down like three fried egg sandwiches with lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise. Then an omelette, a bowl of grits, and he washes it all down with a stack of chocolate chip pancakes.

He says he still can't break 200 lbs!!

swimming burns lots of cals

Don't forget the rest. This guy eats, swims, and rests.

The amount of energy he expends training would easily encompass 10,000 calories. The food and the rest enable him to continue this insane lifestyle. That and some pretty good genetics :)

I just read yesterday that he suffered badly from ADD/Hyperactivity as a kid and he started swimming as an outlet for his endless energy.

Talk about turning a negative into a positive.

I doubt other swimmers eat this much.

Running 10 miles burns about 1000cals, so running 50 miles burns about 5000cals.

Now, even if his BRM was 3000, if you ran 50 miles that would mean ur burn 8000 cals per day (I realise there is post metabolic effects and stuff like that, but I also haven't facted in he'd burn 120 cals at rest at that BMR asleep).

I'm doubting his exercise intensity for those 5 hours compares to running 10 miles per hour.

Most endurance athletes consume like 5-6000 cals, I'd say I expect the other swimmers to be somewhere in this range if not below

how tall is he?

6'4 and 88kg, so assuming he's about 7% body fat, his BMR per Katch McArble
BMR = 370 + (21.6 X lean mass in kg)= 2137.744

Obviously his metabolism is in fact much higher

I call bullshit. When I used to wrestle for 4 hours a day and run and hour and a halfin the morning, I didnt even consume over 5000 calories and didnt burn that much....

wtf?

If he's 6'4'' you gotta take into consideration bone density and body composition....no way he consumes 10,000 calories a day and he's only 88kgs...thats damn rediculous.

well....
maybe he has some really really really good genetics
plus are you sure he swims five hours a day and not even more than that.
anyways hes a beast
i can't even swim laps for more than an hour without getting dizzy

If you're skeptical, I suggest you guys try swimming if you haven't. You burn so many calories when you swim. I have swam a lot and now my main swimming activity is on a surf board which still burns tons of calories.

I'm not talking about trying one session in the pool, but try making it your lifestyle for a few weeks and see how many calories you take in or feel like you could take in :P If I don't consume a lot more calories based on what my BMR says I should I will lose strength/endurance/muscle in no time.

When I'm finished with a session, I could eat an entire cow and a loaf of bread if I wanted.

What I don't understand is how much Phelps must be shitting.

When I'm eating 4K+, I seem to have go to the toilet 5-6 times per day. I can't imagine what 10K would be like

he probably isn't eating much more quantity wise. think how little food it takes to get 10k when you're eating pizza, choc. chip pancakes, etc. than when you're eating a clean diet. almost all his cals are carbs too

Yeah, and its probably not much fiber wise. I'm only doing right at 3,000 (maintenance) a day now but with the amount of flaxmeal and oatmeal i'm consuming, that's several trips to the can!

yeah, i know a dude who is 6'5" 140lbs, eats like a pig (prob not 10k calories) and doesnt even work out or exercize. he cant gain weight and looks like the poster child for the "feed the hungry" ethiopian kids. if i even look at a candy bar, i gain 5 lbs.

Yeah, and i think he only eats like 3 - 4 meals a day. An article I read had an interview where he gave his typical daily diet and he only listed breakfast, lunch, dinner, but they were all equivalent to a buffet binge.

thats insane, just crazy\

i want to know how much his food bill is/month at 12k calories it would be hefty but Govt is picking up the tab so good on him

imagine how much weight he would gain if he were to sustain a career ending injury.

12 000 cals is really somthing you would have to ween off...

You do burn alot of cals from swimming as another poster mentioned your body is constantly maintaining proper temperature so essentially it's in overdrive while swimming to stay warm.

Another thing. I believe swimming burns more cals than running and is a superior form of excercise because it has almost no negative impact on the body and requires alot more muscular activity, especially from the upper body.

I disagree. Swimmers typically have much body fat levels that the runners (sprinters). This is the first olympics where the men were really cut, and this is probably because of changes in their non-swimming training (weights etc): see studies comparing body fat, Sportscience Compeat: Swimmers: Body fat mystery!. And further proof is how flabby the women are compared to the short distance runners. "Old mum" Dara is the most cut swimmer and she does most of her training outside the pool

Most calorie charts put running above swimming: Calories Burned During Exercise

I believe it. I bet I eat around 7000 cals a day at 180 lbs. I have a labor intensive job, workout, and do cardio training.

I'm losing weight on my current diet at 180 lbs.

It is insane
When I am at my largest(285 @ around 12% bf) in the offseason and pushing HARD to gain with 2 a day workouts I MIGHT hit 12,000 calories once or twice a week.
I probably shit 10 times and my diet is 80% clean food

i think phelps is just a freak personally. lol

the guy swims 10km+ a day. sometimes its 10km a session. elite swimmers will train morning and night which means some days he will be swimming 20km+. of those kms a lot of it will be hiit doing split times with set rests. intense training. then you add in his weight training during the day (he only started doing weights recently in the last couple of years!) and the fact there is no doubt the guy is a genetic freak. i have no doubt about it. as was stated above most of his food is made up of carbs which says he is purely eating for fuel. its not as if he wouldnt have the best doctors, dietians advising him either. there is no way i would want to work as hard as him to eat like that lol!

imagine what he could do if he took in 12,000 cals of healthy food though. Chicken Breast, tuna, veggies, salmon, pork, beef, almonds, peanut butter, and way more protein!!!!

I believe it.
Everyone's BMR (basal metabolic rate) is different. I'm 1/10th as active as he is, but have to eat consistently 6k ED to weigh over 300lbs.

Yeah, I'd like to see him eat 12,000 cals of brocolli and chicken and explode

he eats for the carbs. carbs=energy. excessive protein wouldn't help him in what he is trying to achieve, it would probably be counter productive in his case
