Metal Gear Solid 4 reviewed

My only criticism about every MGS game in the past is the massive amounts of cutscenes. Story is fine, but a ten minute scene takes away from game play.

From reviews so far it sounds like there's 20 hours of gameplay and roughly 10 hours of cutscenes, although most of them are interactive. Watch the gametrailers video review.

There's a lot of cutscenes in this one. The cool thing is you can pause them all or skip them altogether. Although lets face it, you wouldn't buy a Metal Gear game if you didn't like cutscenes lol.

I've played a couple hours just getting a feel for it. Kinda overwhelming at first. The most interesting first two hours of a video game I've played yet though.

I was surprised by this -

So far it's seemed to have been reviewed far more subjectively than most other recent games. It's been a while since a game's gotten this good of a score without massive marketing/hype influence behind it. At least stateside. I trust this site more now, seeing as how they're the first to give it a higher score than GTA IV, which so far hasn't lived up to the hype-inflated reviews according to most people who've played it.

Damn it. I didn't want to have to buy a PS3.

There are of course hints that it may be ported eventually to the 360. Kojima was interviewed and asked this very question, although in a more subtle way. He was translated as saying,

Speaking about other platforms, this is a very difficult question, I must say. My biggest mission that I had to accomplish was to create and finish MGS 4 for the PS3, and that was my biggest mission so far. And I have to really sit down and think about what I want to do for other platforms after this when the game is released. But you know looking back, I think we used a lot of the power of the Cell processor, because I had to allocate correctly the simultaneous tasks that it offers, whether it's graphics, sound, program AI. And also the project got so vast it had to use the Bluray disc in a dual layer. And there were some parts that were really specific and only able to be accomplished on a PS3, in many aspects...so it's kind of difficult, right now... what I'm thinking is how I can change this around for other platforms.

Just picked this up today...my second game after GTA4.

Never played an MGS game in the past. Its interesting.

I just finished it. I'm amazed that they tied up all loose ends and didn't make it sound stupid. It all made sense.

Damn you must've played almost nonstop. I want to finish a couple PC games (Far Cry, Bioshock) before diving in to MGS 4.

Yep. I was "sick" on Friday. I have been waiting two years for this game. :D

Far Cry was a great game. Crappy Story.

I have no idea why people liek Bioshock so much. I played it and like the undertones (morality, etc), but the actual game and story wasn't to my liking. That said, I did like the one quote about a man and a slave.

Skip those two and play MGS 4, "if you kindly".

I finished both MGS1 and 2 but I never played 3... Is it a must I play 3 before I play 4???

I thought 3 was damn close to being as good as one. Best story anyway, and best gameplay if you get Subsistence because of the 3d camera. About the only thing you'll missunderstand if you don't play 3 are the cool flashback sequences. Otherwise it's supposedly easy to get up to speed on everything.

I'm pretty underwhelmed with Bioshock so far. I don't want to have to fight those big guardians because they are 10x tougher than anyone else. Plus the plasmids don't last worth a shit so you constantly have to keep injecting/shooting/injecting/shooting. Blegh. Hacking is tedious too. I'm starting the third level and hope it gets more interesting/immersive like they say it is.

Let's put it this way. 3 and Portable Operations introduce some new characters that will make 4 a whole lot more interesting...

I know what you mean. As I was playing Bioshock, I kept asking myself "Where is this great game that people rave over?" Sure, the tapes are interesting and tell a neat backstory, but that's only provided that you FIND THEM ALL.

If I were you, I'd just drop it and just see the cutscenes via Youtube. They may not make alot of sense, but they won't make sense in the game either. :)

To me, Bioshock has been one of the biggest letdowns in the recent future.

yeah I love the whole storyline behind the game, I think that's what makes is sweet. I'm just going to buy MGS3 and play it on my ps3 first (ps3 plays old ps2 games right?)

60 gig no problem. 80 gig is emulation. 40 gig I don't think does at this point but emulation is supposedly in the works there too.

"Would you kindly" haha. As you can see from my new sig gif I liked BioShock quite a bit after completing it, and especially that twist in the story. It is different though, and my main complaint is that they tried to fit in too many gameplay elements, and it took away from the flow of roughly 75% of the game. They should've focused more on the shooting mechanics and cut down on the hacking/collecting/upgrading. It felt like an rpg shooter, which would've worked better if the game was as long as an rpg. I played on PC but I'd like to see what they do with the PS3 version this fall too.

At last I can dig in to MGS 4. :chomp:

Ah well, it has been awhile since I played that game.

I can't believe how good the character models look in MGS 4. They're arguably better than Crysis.
Still playing the first act, just got done fighting the Frogs.

Wait until the nude scene! Oh shit.

Sometimes, I had a few freezing problems with ps2 games so I just gave them all away.

There's no nude scene according to the rating. If there is though I hope it's Naomi.
