The wife and I are looking at a few places we might like to live. Would like to here pros/ cons for canada. What are AAS laws.

bent

You're a married man and you're going to factor AAS laws into that decision?

Canada is the same as USA but the people are nicer and smarter.
Canadians know that the world is bigger than Canada.
If you're looking for something quite different than USA, then don't come to Canada. Maybe try a country in the United Kingdom.

I think Toronto would rock if it wasn't so damn cold.

lol my experience with your brethern has been quite different.
ever been to northern ontario?

AAS law here is: amounts considered for personal consumption are NOT ILLEGAL to possess.

It's hard to recommend a city without knowing what industry you/your wife are employed in, as some industries vary greatly by region.

Cost of living is much lower on the east coast, but so are avg salaries/wages. The west coast has generally higher pay but also higher cost of living.

If you think Toronto is cold, visit Montreal in January. Although they have malls and restaurants and everything you need underground so you can just live like a mole until spring.

What do you like to do?

What activities do you like, or are looking for?

What population size are you looking for?

movies gym eating out walkin around..usual stuff

smaller population, we keep to ourselves, just want to look at nature as opposed to buildings and cars all day.
I cant stand our goverment. the older i get the less i like america..so we are looking at options.

Calgary is a beautiful city. Cold in the winter but then you get Chinooks and the temp goes way up.
The Rockies are about an hour away.
There is everything there.

I love Canada to death but one thing you really need to be prepared for is paying much higher taxs depending on your tax bracket and provience it can be in the neighbourhood of 40%.

East Coast? LOL no jobs there even for the locals...all the Newfs are heading to Fort Mac!

Don't go anywhere east of Kingston if you don't parlez vous francais

are taxes higher because health care is built in? how is the health care?
Here you can work your whole live have enough to be comfortably retirerd and get sick (cancer, stroke and need long term medical care) and your money can vanish paying medical bills and its like you worked your whole life for nothin. I will not have that happen to us. It happens all the time in the states..

IMHO Kelowna BC is the best place to live in Canada. Kelowna Wiki

Relative to most Canadian cities, Kelowna enjoys a dry climate and mild temperatures. Summers are hot and sunny, with daytime temperatures often exceeding 35 °C (95.0 °F). Clear, dry summer air allows nighttime temperatures to fall rapidly. The city averages about 300 millimetres (12 in) of precipitation per year, with about 1/3 of the precipitation falling as snow, the bulk in December and January. Very Dry.

In summer, boating, golf, hiking and biking are popular, and in winter, both Alpine skiing and Nordic skiing are favourite activities at the nearby Big White and Silver Star ski resorts.

As well as Revelstoke Mountain Resort, being 1.5 hrs away, the newest BC ski destination with the greatest vertical in North america and annual snowfall between 40-60 feet! Huge mountain, with huge snowfall.

Okanagan Lake, as well as the blocking barriers of the Canadian Rockies and the Columbia Mountains tend to moderate the winter climate, but Arctic air does occasionally penetrates into the valley during winter, usually for short periods.

There truly are 4 seasons in Kelowna, with a few months of hot summer, a few months of cold winter along with a beautiful spring and fall.

Here is an article about kelowna from askmen.com, a quality source .

...With wine, beaches, beautiful weather, and plenty of sexy Canucks, Kelowna is very much the Laguna Beach of Canada.....

While I don't think Laguna Beach of Canada is a very good comarison, but it's close. I would think "the Lake Tahoe of Canada" is a better fit. ( Note - I have never been to Tahoe or Laguna)

Housing costs are cheaper compared to Vancouver, and kelowna is significantly drier and hotter in the summer, but cooler in the winter.

If you are looking for the ultimate "small town will all the comforts of the city" and great outdoor recreation, it would be hard to find a place as perfect as kelowna.

The local economy seems to be still going strong and the City and surrounding area is growing at fast rate, due to the money from Alberta making it's way over.

I've been to the BC interior in the summer before (Kelowna and Penticton) and can vouch for what Jocques is saying...it's an incredibly beautiful place.

moving countries because of better drug laws just
seems a bit extreme for the rec jooser.
but whatever man
:)

Perhaps read the whole thread before you dig a depper hole for yourself, inquireing about the laws are always important, but moving has nothing to do with "joose" as you put it...

Its o.k., Ive been a victim of speed reading and missed the whole point of a topic myself in the past :)

Thanks so much for the info..this is what I am looking for educated advises from residents. Thank you guys/gals!

Can any one tell me about the health care system/unemployment rate/crime rate?

Do you intend to come and breed like rabbits and be a huge drain our welfare and medical system? That seems to be our biggest pre-requisite to get in.
If you speak french, you'll be welcomed in Quebec.

LOL! no not at all:) No kids, make good money , just want it quiet/pretty, and get away from politicians ruining what was once a nice country (IMO).

My wife speaks french and a little italian, I on the other hand will have to work on it.. english is all I have at the moment.

That is a good point but you need to have additonal insurance to cover everything. OHIP only covers so much then you need to pay out of pocket or get a decent plan from the company you work for. As for the level of health care that is debatable I haven't had a family Dr. for over 10 years because of the shortage of GP's in Ontario.

Is that differant from Providence to Providence?
Are there free clinics like the states?
You mentionedd needing additional coverage, Is general health covered with additionals for dental, optometirist, and specialist?

Canada is nazis at protecting their healthcare. Quickest way to get deported --- start getting medical treatment. Canada will toss 80 year old grandmas onto airplanes if that's what it takes.

The US are big pussies when it comes to deportation and political correctness, Canada is hardcore in that arena.

Yep, their is crime in canada. You can expect similar crime in a canadian city as you would get in an america city. Vancouver has the worst crime in Canada. Although violent crime isn't as common. Property crime is high. It's all the homeless peeps breaking into cars, stealing your loonies and toonies from your ashtray.

There is a good amount of homeless people but I don't really hang out where they like to so they don't bother me. It's not like they are all over the streets begging for money.

You can generally expect to pay more for everything in Canada. Gas, food, tax, everything is more expensive. Everything.

I also don't think the quality of service that you get in Canada is as good as the quality of service I got in Dallas or phoenix. It's as if the "staff" at stores/restaurants aren't trained to be as accommodating to the customer. The little things that makes you feel good about giving a business your money are lacking.

I have also had much better experiences dealing with medical issues in the US vs, Canada. But haven't had many issues in either country so I'm ignorant, and can't really comment here. I pay around 100$ per month for Health insurance that will cover anything serious.

I was Canadian born and moved from Canada to Texas at 15, then to phoenix, then northern cali, then Washington state, then back to arizona before moving back to Canada. I lived in the US for 9 years. Now, I live back in Canada and the things I miss most about the US is the price of gas, online shopping and Chipotle.

If you want a quite place, I would generally avoid southern Ontario and if you go north, you're going to have a hell of a winter. As previously mentioned Quebec you will be frowned upon if you can't speak French and that mentality tends to carry out into the maritimes. Manitoba is extremely quite, depending on how quite you are looking to go, really your only major city would be Winnipeg there. Sask. and Alberta are relatively boring provinces and tend to have hectic cold in the winter, especially the more northern "Oil" area like Fort McMurry also previously mentioned. Edmonton and Calgary are fairly good if you are looking for a city that is reasonably small but still has lots to do and a friendly atmosphere. BC is spectacular in a lot of ways, but I've only spent a handful of days on vacation there, so I can't offer up a whole lot of advice on crime, cost of living, etc. Ontario is the most common place I would say and is where I've lived all my life. If you do end up in this area and want a quite area, I would say try the Barrie area. Its about an hour North of Toronto so quite, but still in a good distance to a major city. Anything east of Toronto is stuck in the 50s (Basing itself solely on production by the GM plant) and anything west of the Toronto is becoming quite populated, and industrial at the same time.

These are just my opionions and obviously some people will disagree, hope it helped.

Kelowna is the best city in USA and Canada hands down..

Despite QT's problems, I've never had a problem getting a doctor for myself or my family.

The taxes are higher for alot of reasons. Mainly socialistic reasons, but I don't see as much abuse as the US appears to be afraid of. That said, the mentality is different (not better or worse) then that of the border.

Don't worry about Bino's experiences. We've got wanted posters of him up around the town igloo.

Compared to some US states (Cali, NY...) our taxes are not higher. In fact, business taxes-capital gain are lower. And it's way easier to do business from my experience...

Move to jane/finch in Toronto. The bevelry hills of Canada. :)

r

jane and finch is not that baddass. you should look at rexdale and some other places in etobicoke. you want badass, look at some of the places with a lot of lebanese, like scarborough or windsor...that's fuckin hardcore

Lebs LOL when was the last time they shot or stabbed somebody? I never hear about lebanese house parties on the news LOL.
Try going to Dixon Road and fucking with the Somalis. I have to go there every week. those niggaz will swarm you and stab you for a cigarette even if you don't smoke.
