is there anyway i can excel at powerlifting whilst taking part in one of the above disicplines?

I dont want the extra training to affect my strength goals.

anyone powerlift and train in a martial art?

if so what type and what are your opinions.

i would like to be involved in a grapling type sport with some striking components, i have a friend who is a kickboxer....but i dont know if i like the lack of ground fighting.

I am going to visit a vale tudo gym and check it out

I don't think it will affect your strength all that much, myself I still do boxing once a week just for about 30 minutes-1 hour depending on my schedule.

I believe TAPOUT also does ju jitsu once or twice a week and powerlifts.

It would be nice if Tapout actually rolled 1-2x's a week :D shit 1-2x's a month would be good.

Actually bro I got caught up in Juijitsu after grappling (rolling) over at Tapouts house one night. I've been at it for almost 6 months now 5-6 days a week. Its extremely hard to do all you need to do for powerlifting and still do vale tudo. The amount of cardio thats involved can wreak havoc on your size depending on your metabolism. As it is I have enough of a time keeping size on with no cardio. Also, there is the issue of flexibility. I just recently started my first cycle in 6 months and already I am losing wind and flexibility despite stretching several times a day. Granted I lean more towards the BBing side of things but you get what I mean. Certain moves are simply impossible or at very least extremely difficult to do without a great deal of flexibility.

I am not discouraging you from doing it personally I am addicted and love it. I cant do enough, but there are limitations that our size has on doing this sort of thing.

Well i can tell you from first hand experince. I was the first in our group in Juititsu and i always trained heavy. And i just cant do it. Even if your fuckin around and doing little drills , practicing technique you will be soreas shit when it comes to trainig. Think about it in lifting the number one thing you must protect in order to perform 100% is what? Your joints. Your compromising them when you grapple and get tapped. So if you do it be care full and if you wanna go all the way in powerlifting i wouldnt. If there just hobbies and you dont care too much about lifting freaky weight, then its possible. Meaning if your bench is good and your happy and all of a sudden your arm get arm barred and you cant bench very well for a couple weeks if that doesnt bother you go for it.

I am following a Westside routine and I also do a boxers workout 3 times per week which includes bag work and rope skipping, and I don't experience any problems with weight progression as long as I keep up my nutrition and use a few recovery techniques.

ALRIGHT ENDPOINT HERE WE GO--got a few minutes

pl jay and juice junkie are a couple of my best friends--we have a group of about 7 dudes and are wives and kids ---we all hang out, eat, train ,watch pljay drink beer and fuss about your question.

i went to jay in the begining of 1997 and told him i found a ju jitsu school and he went the next night so yes he was first. he stopped after a few months and i have kept going. i got juice into it and he is learning at a genius pace. WE TALKED TONIGHT AND I AM GOING TO START ROLLING 1 X PER WEEK AGAIN
ju jitsu is by far the best martial art. i have been involved in martial arts since i was 10 years old i'm 34 now . within 3 months of ju jitsu it made me realize all others are obsolete. we do 80% ground and 20% or less striking and throws. i have used it about 12 x in fights(work) and easly won each time using a submission on a person(i try to warn them they just dont listen) ---martial arts dont make you unbeatable it just gives you an edge and with jujitsu it gives a major edge--people expect punching and kicking--i dont, i get a lock or choke and suprise the person.pljay would rather ground and pound.i just hope i dont get the shit knocked out of me before i grab them, but i does give you great confidence because it keeps you in any fight and the average person dont stand much of a chance.
i have been weight training for 15 years and 12 seriously and i love it a little more--i am 244 at 5-10 and i like being big and what comes with it. i like the respect and the fact i dont get tried much because my size but when i do i'm ready(its my job-i dont go out and get into street fights but my job calls for fighting sometimes)
so this was a history to answer your question

pljay is right--you have to choose 1 to put more into to you cant put 50-50 . i am already a brown belt and at this time no desire for a black or to open a school so i chose power lifting. for these reasons:(1)my wife and sons likes to lift weights and we can do weights together she does not like ju jitsu-so i can spend more time with family (2)class is 30-35 minute drive then 1 hr class and 30-35 minute drive back--i'm not into that right now if i can train at home,i got my own mats ,and go to class sometimes i will ALREADY TOLD JUICE ONCE A WEEK AT HOUSE SO NOW I AM TRAINING AGAIN(3)did it 3 x per week for years got burned out (4)last but not least INJURIES ju jitsu hurts and takes a lot out of you espically if your big-- with all the hits you take, joint locks ,throws ,shoots and falls,i had more injuries and pains then ever in lifting and did more drugs(pain stuff) then elvis presley.

so basically ju jitsu is great and i would recomend it to any one wanting to do martial arts and i fell you can do both (i'm 34 recovery makes it harder)but 1 has to get more attention than the other-you have to choose which 1 would be most important

hope this helps good luck bro

thanks tapout.

due to time constrictions i can only train Brazilian JJ once a week and powerlifting will be my numberone concern.

I am 22years old so i guess time is on my side. I have no desire to climb my way quickly through the ranks......i just need a martial art to understand

I have one problem though...a weak knee. I have dislocated my patella twice (last was two years ago) Its the first thing i think of when i try a new acctivity.

because of my knee i was thinking of sticking with boxing and just do drills.....my knee is so much stronger...but sometimes i can notice it
still thinking

thanks for all your help

These guys are correct. I do not think that I could train in Martial Arts like I used to and still keep my strength.

For example...all of my event training...DOES affect my strength in my core lifts...yet I get better and stronger in my events. You have to put one in front of the other...the one you really want to be good at.

When I was much younger, I was involved in full contact karate.
I started doing the martials when I was 14 and at about 20 years
of age, I got involved in full contact. Did it for about 3 years. Now
that I am older, 45 years old, I want to maintain some form of
cardio fitness. I work the heavy bag twice a week for about 25
to 30 minutes per session.

To be frank, I think the heavy bag work is killing my bench. My
shoulders are sore as I do a lot of jabs, crosses and hooks. My
squat and deadlift continue to increase while my bench is stalled.

For those of you that want to reach the top in powerlifting,
maybe it is best to stay away from heavy martial arts training.

Take this advice with a grain of salt as I am new to powerlifting.
I am going to keep doing bag work. If my bench starts to go
up, I will let y'all know.

Endpoint - There is a knee brace at sports authority here in our town. I will get the name and model for you. Our brazilian instructor had his knee bent completely backwards and has never had surgery to correct the problem. He was recommend to get this special brace and has not had a problem training since. The knee brace is not the typical brace you might pick up at walmart it has two stiff baces and a hinge running down the sides and works extremely well. I will get on and get you the info later tonight.

1 day a week should be fine but beware the little guys, they are often so fast that they lock in a submission faster than you can tap and I've had my share of swollen joints because of this.
