This is one of my all-time faves: 445 on the bar, black and white, no knee wraps, no spot, deep as hell, slip on shoes, Arnold and Dave Draper for cryin out LOUD! I just love the old school venice beach shots...I can just hear those thick old plates rattling...can't you?

Yeah, that Arnold, he didn't know shit about working out...:)

Hey, I put my heels on a 2x4 myself. But someone else in here mentioned that a while ago and damn, they got jumped!:D

I love the pics like that... I have the encyclopedia and there are a few like that in there. Awesome motivation.

great pic, but why doesn't the bar bend in such a pleasing way when I squat that much weight?

I read that arnold initially went to the gym to strengthen his legs for soccer, but he fell in love with the weights....

Also , at times he went to the woods with franco columbo and there they did 50 (!) sets of squats in the open air.....

Arnold was a pretty good Deadlifter and squater, which is why i find it remarkable that some of todays pro's are able to build bigger legs and thicker backs using LESS WEIGHT!!!

Somebody explain me that...

Two reasons - drugs, and I'll let Cornholio discuss the other ;-)

Arnold was a very good deadlifter, and could do 750lb if I recall correctly. Thats not bad for a bodybuilder. He had a very strong lower back, just look at those erectors.

Whether Arnold could actually dead 750, I don't know, but he has said that was his best lift on the Letterman Show. In his bodybuilding Encyclopedia he has a photo of Franco pulling either 700 or 750, (I'm not sure which). Which is even more impressive when you consider the guy was 180-200 lbs.

Not sure if Franco pulled 7 something. I was thinking it was 7 plates which would be 675.

Boy, don't let Spatts or Hannibal see that. He has his heels on a board.:)

Just means he was squatting to build his quads. For his goals that is perfect form. Different strokes for different folks. :)

I just checked out Franco's website, here is a list of his personal bests:

http://www.columbu.com/training/titles.html

World Records in Powerlifting:
Bench Press 520 lbs.
Squat 655 lbs.
Deadlift 750 lbs.
Records in Weightlifting:
Olympic Press 325 lbs.
Snatch 270 lbs.
Clean and Jerk 400 lbs.

Here is the photo I was talking about.
